John came to Dugger's Ferry, NC (now Fish Springs) with his parents when he was one year of age.spouse: Engle, Mary (1785 - 1869)
John and Mary ENGLE were married 26 February 1801, in Butler, TN, by John Sands, Esq., in a house near where Shupe's Mill is located.
John's nickname was "Kettlefoot John."
Pam Cresswell (<jcress@tfs.net>) writes, "Kettlefoot was the name of a huge bear that was eating the livestock of some of our Johnson County kinfolk. It got it's name because it had huge feet. I believe Nat Wills killed it with his buffalo
rifle."
Both John and Mary lived beyond 80 years of age, and died within six months of each other. They were married for almost 68 years.
