The tongs are made from  2 three foot pieces of 1/2" barstock and two pieces of 2" X 4" X1/8" plate. The 1/2" barstock is cut to size and holes are drilled through the center of the pieces of plate. The barstock is then welded to the plate each piece plate. The 1/2" piece of irrigation pipe is cut into 2 pieces that are welded to the 1' piece of barstock. These become the pieces that grip the crucible.

The latch is then assembled by welding the 1" pieces of the 3/4" pipe to the ends of the 1" X 2" piece of plate.   The latch is used to keep a tight grip in the crucible while pouring metal.

THE CRUCIBLE:

The crucible is made by welding a 5" piece of 3 1/2" irrigation pipe to a piece of 3 3/4' X 1/8" piece of plate. I welded lips (also made out of 3 1/2" irrigation pipe) to the top of the crucible so that the tongs would not slip off while lifting it. The latch on the tongs and the lips on the crucible make it almost impossible to drop the crucible while lifting it out of the furnace.
