The Furnace
Design:
The design of the furnace is
much like the one I saw on the internet: the bottle is cut to accomodate the crucible and
lined with refractory. The bottle is turned upside down and holes are then cut in the top
half for the exhaust and the bottom half to accept the burner. . The handles of the bottle
now make a nice stand for the furnace. Details of the planning and construction can be
seen on Page 2.
Parts Required:
- 1 Ea. - Used, Empty Freon Bottle
- 1 Ea. - 75# bag of 3000 degree castable refractory
- 1 Ea. - coat hanger
- 6 Ea. - Crown bolts with washers and nuts
- 1 Ea. - Can of 1200 degree engine paint
- 2 Ea. - piece of sheet metal to make the forms to cast the refractory.
- Scrap wood as required to hold the sheet metal in place while the refractory is
being cast.
- Various tools as are available in your shop. I used a plasma cutter and a mig
welder to build the furnace. I could just as well have used a jigsaw to cut the bottle.
