The Painted Canyons of the Rio Grande
by
Louis F. Aulbach

Below Dryden Crossing, the Rio Grande begins a descent through low canyon walls and limestone hills as it fixes its course toward the coastal lowlands. As the river approaches the historic town of Langtry, it passes through the country of the Lower Pecos cultural area. Pictographs and cave shelters give a hint of the lifeways of the primitive peoples who lived here over 5,000 years ago. Lake Amistad begins below Langtry and the river becomes a part of the lake prior to its confluence with the Pecos River and the take out at the boat ramp.
