If there has been one constant in my last thirty-eight
years or so, it has been a love of fast cars. My cars have always
had to be more than just "transportation devices." They
had to have a bit of "style." They had to have a good
power-to-weight ratio, turn corners with flare, handle through the esses
and brake with aplomb. In short, "driver's" cars.
Throughout my "racing years," from 1971 through
about 1986, I carried on continuing visceral contact with speed and
handling through a series of racing venues, mostly sanctioned by the
Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and various local Regions throughout
the U.S. I have raced Formula Cars (Formula SV); Sports Cars -
including Datsun/Nissan Z-Cars of various years and engines, Triumphs,
Corvettes, Fiats and Porsches; and. Sedans/Coupes (Volkswagen GTI, Nissan
Altima, Buick Regal GT)
Now that my son is of an age to appreciate speed and
handling, the cycle has renewed itself, with his preparation of a Honda
Civic. I guess I am just going to have to pull my venerable 1972
Datsun 240Z out of retirement and see if it has any more races in the
engine and chassis that has seen over 300 events over the last 31 years.
Sounds like the fun is just beginning, again
By the way, I insisted on teaching both my son and daughter
how to drive a stick shift with a clutch before I ever let them behind
the wheel of an automatic.
