No one expects to be able to accomplish miracles with the martial arts.  I have been fortunate, however, to see just what effect adherence to the principals of focus and discipline can have.  Sometimes, the twin traits of desire and persistence are said to be all that is necessary for success.  This is not all that is needed.  Even though all four of the qualities can help build character and point the way to success - whether in the martial arts or any endeavor - one quality makes the difference between the calm and peace of true success and failure.  That quality is "Attitude."

Having a good attitude is, for any true martial artist, the most important ingredient.  I have repeatedly seen it in the sparring ring and at tournaments.  Someone comes in who has not had the benefit of sustained practice and preparation, either due to their work schedule or because of other factors, and taken the Grand Championship away from more qualified and better-prepared opponents.  It is "attitude" that made the difference.  The one opponent came into the match with no false expectations, went out to just do his/her best, and achieved much more than was expected, all because their attitude was right.

For the last twelve years, I have tried to live up to these values.  It is not always easy.  I train and teach as often as I can, considering other commitments and obligations.  My disciplines are American Karate, in which I am a Senior Instructor, and JuJitsu.  I combine these two disciplines to teach self-defense and study practical methods of defense and combat.  I am a member of a grappling club, Wildcard Alliance, in which all present members hold Brown or Black Belt rank in one or more disciplines.
