AR.184 The Lewis Family Cemetery in Dayton "was started in 1881 or 1882 when Nancy Body, daughter of Lovie Lewis and Franklin Boyd, died as they were moving to Arkansas from Kentucky. The little coffin was brought with the family on the long journey. John told his niece Lovie (daughter of Warren Lewis) that the child could be buried on the knoll across the creek behind the house. They built a tomb of bricks above ground. Later, when Franklin Boyd died, they decided to bury both him and Nancy underground. The story is told that, looking through the glass lid of the child's coffin, her body was beautiful and well preserved. The coffin was opened, and immediately the body turned to dust." George BREWER was born in 1718 in VA.197 He was living in 1739 in Onslow Co. NC.197,198 I enter this here to keep track of the data, but I have seen no substantiation of George Brewer's time in Onslow.

Another George Brewer received a patent for 300 acres in Bertie, joining the Beaver pond Creek and the Branch on 23 November 1739. He was living in Oct 1779 in Anson Co. NC. The Oct. 1779 petition to divide Anson Co. was signed, in Section 8, George Brower. Other familiar names in that section were Nathan Brasell, Thos. Lacy, and James and John Redfern. He owned Received grant on 14 Oct 1783 in Anson Co. NC. He appeared in the census in 1790 in Anson Co. NC.199 George Brewer was listed with 2 males under 16 and 7 females. If these were all his children (except for 1 female being his wife), it would imply that both John and Benjamin were born in 1774 or later and none of the females were married.

There is a John Medford with two females listed next to Richard Lee Sr. This could be the Medford who married a Brewer. If it is, then who is the 7th female?

There is also a John Brewer listed with 3 females. Assuming this is George's son, who is the other male? He signed a will on 20 May 1794 in Anson Co. NC.200 George Brewer's will gave his daughters Jemima Brewer 50 acres of land "from the plantation whereon I now live," Sarah Brewer 50 acres joining Jemima's, Rachel Brewer 50 acres joining Sarah's, Fannie Brewer 50 acres joining Rachel's, Mary Brewer 50 acres joining Fannie's; son Benjamin Brewer 100 acres formerly possessed by John Brewer; grandsons George Madford and Japta Medford. Witnesses James Warden, William Henson, and Tobias Theophelus Lotter. It was probated January term of court, 1795, Book D. and E. page 38. He died bet 5-1794 12-1794 in Anson Co. NC.200 Will was signed in May 1794 and probated in January term of court 1795. There are numerous George Brewers in North Carolina. What I have here is mostly conjecture and certainly should not be used as fact.

Spouse: Mary (BREWER). George BREWER and Mary (BREWER) were married about 1750. The Long Brewer book says that George Brewer married Mary Unknown abt 1750. Children were: John BREWER, Lebeth? BREWER, Benjamin BREWER, Jemima BREWER, Sarah BREWER, Rachel BREWER, Fannie BREWER, Mary Ann BREWER.

Spouse: Jemima UNKNOWN. George BREWER and Jemima UNKNOWN were married in 1765 in Edgecombe Co. NC. This is a possibility, but not proven.

No deed that we have found lists a wife for George nor does his will mention a wife.

In Johnston Co. NC Jemima Lee, mother of Richard and Bryan Lee and widow of Solomon Lee, married George Brewer. Brewer is asked by the courts to be Jemima's surety in the estate of her deceased husband Solomon Lee. It is not proven that this is the same George Brewer who is later in Anson Co. However, it seems more than coincidental that Richard and Bryan Lee bought their first land in Anson Co. (1790) from George Brewer and that George Brewer had a daughter and a granddaughter named Jemima. These deeds to the Lees were witnessed by Libeth Brewer. It is unknown whether this is George's wife, the daughter who married Madford and is deceased by the time he writes his will in 1794, or neither.

On 12 January 1795, the same month that George Brewer's will is proven in court, a Jemina Brewer bought 100A on Negrohead for 20 pounds from John Smith of Montgomery Co. NC. It seems odd that George's daughter bought land so soon after he died. Perhaps this was a deed that George had already begun negotiating and Jemimah, being the eldest, carried through with it. Or perhaps Jemima is George's widow?

The Long Brewer Line Colonial Family Genealogy says that Jemima (George's daughter) married George Brewer. This might explain who the George Brewer is who, along with Jemimah, Sarah, Rachel, Fance, and Maryann, sold 350 acres, including the 100 acres bought by Jemima from John Smith. However, if she were married, it is highly unlikely she would have either inherited land or bought land in her own name.

Annie Lee Traywick's Ancestor Chart dated July 30 1997 shows George's wife as Sarah Lanier.

Jemima BREWER194,195,200 was born about 1757 in Orange Co. NC.195,201 Ben Brewer did not state a place of birth, but he mentions land patented by George's father in Orange Co. in 1756 and 1759. The earliest land transaction we have listed for George in Anson Co. is 1783, so it is likely his children were born prior to his move to Anson Co. Parents: George BREWER and Mary (BREWER).

Jemima BREWER79 was born about 1789.202,203 She owned one slave in 1850 in Union Co. NC.204 In the 1850 slave census, Jimima Ross is listed with 1 black male slave age 42 (difficult to read). Her son Thomas Ross is listed with two slaves: 1 black female age 49 and 1 black male age 9 (again difficult to read both sex and age). She was living in 1860 in Union Co. NC.205 She was listed in 1860 census with Lanes Boro Post Office but only 28 households away is Pleasant M. Little who is listed at Olive Branch PO. In 1870, Lanesboro is listed as in Anson Co. She was living in 1870 in New Salem Twp, Union Co. NC.206 Also listed in New Salem Twp in 1870 census on page 618 were: Henry, 16; Richard, 71
page 614: James J, 39; Thomas G, 62; Thomas W, 25; Violet, 7
and on page 634 (same page as Jemima): Violet, 27 She died in 1880 in Union Co. NC.207,208 Jemima was 60 in in 1850 census and living alone between brother-in-law Thomas Ross and daughter Martha Little and near Dugal. In 1870 census she was 82 and living with daughter Sarah and her husband, Ennis Staton.

In 1880, Jemima was living with her grandson. On 25 January 1881, Marcus C. Austin applied for and was granted a letter of administration upon the estate of Dugald Ross, who died in 1845. I believe this indicates that the widow, Jemima, had died and the remainder of the estate was to be distributed. Parents: John BREWER and Nancy GRIFFIN.

Spouse: Dougal M. ROSS. Children were: Nancy ROSS, Lydia ROSS, Keziah ROSS, Ester ROSS, Dugal Washington ROSS, Jemima ROSS, Sarah ROSS, Martha ROSS.

John BREWER was born between 1751 and 1760.195,203 The Long Brewer book says John Brewer was born about 1751, while Julie Ganis says he was born about 1760. If Nancy Griffin was his first wife, the latter birthdate would seem more likely. He died before 20 May 1794 in Anson Co. NC.194,203 Julie Hampton Ganis has John dying by 1803, but it would appear that he was deceased by the time his father wrote his will. However, it is possible he had already received his share of the estate and was just not left anything by George. He was buried in RR1458. According to Calvin Edwards, John Brewer was buried in a cemetery located on RR1458, but the cemetery was destroyed around 1989. Parents: George BREWER and Mary (BREWER).

Spouse: Nancy GRIFFIN. John BREWER and Nancy GRIFFIN were married.70,195 Children were: John BREWER Jr, Jemima BREWER, Kizzie BREWER.

Kizzie Lou Jennie BREWER was born on 8 Mar 1872. She died on 21 Feb 1959. Parents: Soloman Rasberry BREWER and Sarah Ann THOMAS.

Spouse: Ellison Lee PARKER.

Lebeth? BREWER was born about 1753.195 She died before 21 May 1794.194 A Lebeth Brewer witnessed deeds in 1790 from George Brewer to Bryan and Richard Lee. It is possible that she is the daughter who married a Madford. However, it seems unlikely that this daughter was still unmarried in 1790. Perhaps census data will clarify this. Parents: George BREWER and Mary (BREWER).

Spouse: Unknown MADFORD. Unknown MADFORD and Lebeth? BREWER were married.194 Children were: George MADFORD, Japta MADFORD.
