Sharper SLAVE OF EPENETUS GRIFFIN was born before 1740. On 18 May 1765, Nathaniel Cooper gave a deposition concerning the intent of Epenetus Griffin with regard to his heirs. Cooper said that when he was writing Epenetus Grifin's will he asked Griffin why the neighbors called the negro man Sharper "his son Epenetus Griffin's negro." "He said that Sharper was but a boy, deformed in his feet, when he traded a horse for him, "& when I brought him home my Wjife was so angry with me that she declared she neer would feed him. Her words put me into a passion, and I said to my son Epenetus riffin ' if you will feed him he shall be called yours.'" This was to be all the title that the sd son was to have to the negro, that he had never intended his sd son to have Sharper; that he heard the testator tell his wife Nanny that since "son John is Young I doube he and you will not be able to manage the sd negro Sharper," thus he to be sold & money to go my son John & my daughter Ann." [Edenton District Loose Papers]

Oddly enough, in January of 1851, 86 years later, Elijah Manning willed a negro man named Sharper to his daughter Lydia Johnson. Elijah was now living in Sumter Co. AL, but he and Gray and Blake Little had all moved there from Edgecombe Co. Clearly it is not possible for this to be the same slave, but I wonder if the second Sharper was a descendant of the Epenetus Griffin's man Sharper.
