Not listed in the Ancestral File, but there were 4 living children not named. Parents: James Franklin ROSS and Frances Elizabeth PERRY. Thomas ROSS. Parents: John ROSS and Rachel HILL. Thomas ROSS1411 was born between 1755 and 1775. All of the Thomas Ross's in the 1800 census were born between 1755 and 1775. Of course, he could have been still living with his father at that time and not listed. But he was called to take pastoral care of the Conetoe church in July 1803, so likely was an adult and living on his own in 1800. He appeared in the census in 1800 in Martin Co. NC. There were 3 Thomas Ross's and one Thos. Ross in the 1800 census. One was in Guilford, p. 656, one in Pitt, p. 261, one in Wake, p 757, and one in Martin, p. 409. All four were in the same age bracket (26-45). In addition to the Reuben Ross in Martin Co. who we know much about, there was also a Reuben in Rockingham Co. and Guilford Co. It is interesting that Thomas named a son Reuben and he went on to be a Primitive Baptist preacher in the same part of Tennessee where the other Reuben made a name for himself. He appeared in the census in 1810 in Martin Co. NC.1412 In 1810, there was only one Thomas Ross in NC and he lived in Martin Co. [NEED TO DEFINE SENTENCE: moved]1388 According to Historical Southern Families (quoting the "History of the Kehukee Primitive Baptist Association" by Elder Cushing Biggs Hassell, 1885, p. 852), Thomas Ross was called to take the Pastoral care of Conetoe Church (a branch of the Church at Flat Swamp, Edgecombe Co. NC) in July 1803 and continued in that office until about 1814, when he removed to Tenn. He was ordained by Elders Joseph Biggs, Jonathan Cherry, and Luke Ward. Goodspeed's History of Tennessee named Thomas Ross as a pioneer preacher of Weakley Co. He organized the old Middle Fork Primitive Baptist Church near Como, Tenn. in 1818. Children were: Reuben ROSS. Thomas ROSS was born about 1767 in Martin Co. NC.260 I am guessing that this is Thos. Ross listed close to George Cockburn, John Ross Sr., John Ross Jr., and Joseph Ross and in the same listing as Hugh Ross, Nathan Ross, Wm. Son of John Ross, and William Ross in the 1787 census. In 1787, this Thos. Ross is either over 60 or under 21 and has one female with him. In the 1790 census, there is 1 male over 21 and 2 males under 21 or over 65, and two females. He appeared in the census in 1787 in Martin Co. NC.1413 In 1787, Thomas Ross was listed as under 21 (assuming he was at least 17, he would be born 1767-1770) or over 65, with one female. He was listed next to John Cockburn and about 23 families away from John Ross Sr. He appeared in the census in 1790 in Martin Co. NC.1414 In 1790, Thomas Ross household had 1 male 21-65 (bef 1769), 2 males under 21 or over 65, and 2 females. He appeared in the census in 1800 in Martin Co. NC.1415 In 1800, a Thomas Ross was listed in Martin Co. as 26-45 (1765-1774), with 1 male 10-16, 1 female 26-45, and 1 female 10-16. He was Primitive Baptist in 1803 in Conetoe, Edgecombe Co. NC.1416 "Conetoe church, formerly a branch of the church at Flat Swamp, was founded in 1803 about eight miles southeast of Tarboro. After remaining as a branch for sometime it petitioned for the privilege to be constituted, which was done on Saturday before the fourth Sunday in July, 1903, by Elders Joseph Riggs, Jonathan Cherry and Joshua Barnes. At that time the church gave Thomas Ross, one of her members, a call to take the pastoral care, which for some reason he did not then accept; but on the Saturday before the fourth Sunday in September following he was ordained by Elders, Cherry, and Luke Ward, and received pastoral care of the church, in which he officiated until his removal to Tennessee." Parents: John ROSS and Elizabeth BENNETT. Children were: Eden ROSS, Cloe ROSS. Thomas ROSS was born on 18 Nov 1804 in Anson Co. NC.1244,1313 Information provided by John Palmer. He died about Sep 1815 in Cedar Hill, Montgomery Co. Tennessee.1417 Within one month four of Reuben's children died: Thomas, Martin, Reuben, and Maria. When "the hot souns of August and September came, a malaria was produced, that brought on ague, chills, and bilious fever...The little children in our family might have recovered had not the whooping-cough supervened. Then nothing could save them." Parents: Reuben ROSS and Mildred YARRELL. Thomas Asa ROSS was born on 22 Jul 1867 in Union Co. NC. Parents: Hosea Thomas ROSS and Sarah Catherine TRAYWICK. The first was a 100 acre tract on Bridge branch which was granted Thomas Griffen 7 June 1799. The second adjoined that tract and James Ross's own land. Thomas A. Griffen and Wm Ross were witnesses. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Union Co. He was living in 1857 in Henderson Co. TN.1419 It is possible, but certainly not proven, that Thomas moved to Henderson Co. for a while and later moved back to Union Co. In 1857, there was a Thomas G. Ross in Henderson Co. TN. Reference pg 499 deed book ? (mortgaged one yoke oxen and five head of cattle). He appeared in the census in 1860 in Union Co. All above quoted from the Ross Papers found in the Heritage Room. He was buried in Aug 1873 in Ross Fam Cem, Union Co, NC.1421 According to the James Ross papers in the Heritage Room, Bascom F. Edwards and his wife now live (1952 I believe) on a 9 acre plat of the original Ross land. In a pine covered knowl on this property is located the "Ross family burial ground." Mr. Edwards took the authors to see the graves. Thomas G. Ross 1806-1873 and his wife Olley Ross 1809-1865 are buried there and the tombstones are very clear. All data about Thomas G. and his descendants (except where a note or a source has been added) was obtained from a GEDCOM file from Dan Lantner, who I believe obtained this information from a correspondent. Before obtaining this file, I had been told by Martha Little that Thomas G. and Ola had only one child: James J. Ross b about 1831. She had Thomas G. married second to Alice Unknown and listed children Evan, Martha E., Amos, Sarah E., Olly M., Thomas W., Elizabeth A. The Monroe Enquirer Our Heritage column dated October 23, 1958, lists Evan, Martha E, Amos, Sarah E, Olley M., Thomas G., Elizabeth A. and possibly Nancy as children of this marriage. Dec. 8, 1760, William Ross's will was signed and proven in court in December 17__, Bk A. , pg. 7. Wife and Executrix was Elizabeth. Mentioned were negro wench Sarah; daus: Juda Ricks, negro boy Popmey; Ann Ricks, negro, Dinah; son & Executor Daniel Ross, negro boy, Jacob. Witnesses were Jacob Hilliard, Jun'r, Thomas Williams Jun'r, and William Robeson, Jun'r. These were the same witnesses as for the will of Kallum Ross, proven 23 Dec. 1760. Spouse: Elizabeth WIFE OF WILLIAM ROSS. Children were: Daniel ROSS, Juda ROSS, Ann ROSS. William ROSS was born about 1706.1426,1427,1428 Estimating William would have been abt 25 when his son William Jr was born in 1731. According to the Martin Co. History, William Ross moved to Martin Co. from VA. Another researcher believes William to have been born in Scotland, which is entirely possible. One researcher suggests he was born about 1700 in Old Norfolk Co. VA. There is a deed in Tyrrell Co. from Thomas Bateman to Alexander Ross merchant of Norfolk Town VA on 10 Feb. 1753. John Ross is a witness. James Ross, the author of Life and Times of Elder Reuben Ross, says his father's grandfather "settled in an early day at Roanoke, Virginia. The year of his emigration from Scotland cannot now be given." He was living before 1731 in Tyrell Co. NC.1426 According to the Martin Co. History, William Ross was one of the earliest settlers in Martin Co. It is implied that his son William was born in Martin Co. (or more accurately the area which later became Martin Co.) in 1731. He was living in Mar 1736/37 in Tyrell Precinct NC.1429 Case against William Ross for a debt dismissed. He was living in 1755 in Tyrell Co. NC.1430 Only John and William Ross were listed in the 1755 Tyrell taxpayer roll. Would John have been William's son or his brother? He owned Sold 47 acres on 25 Dec 1759 in Tyrell Co. NC.1431 25 Dec. 1759, William Ross Sr. (Tyrell) sold 47 acres to William Hyman, also of Tyrell. The line began on Baley's Creek and ran to Great Swamp and thence to a oak on John Duggan's line. The deed was witnessed by William Ross, Hugh Ross (with a mark), and Elizabeth Ross (also signed with a mark). William had bought 147 acres on 25 Mar. 1749 from Edmund Smithwick planter of Tyrrel Co. The land joined Jno. Dugan, Baglis Creek, Thomas Benet, Peter Steencell, John Gardner, Smithwick, sd Portee. It was witnessed by Edward Griffen. The other 100 acres are deeded to William Ross and John Ross in Feb. 1760. He owned 50 acres in Feb 1760 in Tyrell Co. NC.1432 On 20 Feb. 1760, William Ross Sr. sold for 14 pounds proclamation to John Ross 50 acres joining the long swamp known as Great Swamp and the lines of Thomas Bennett, sd William Ross plantation, John Dugan. (pg 11, 12). This deed was witnessed by Edward Smithwick and Elizabeth Willisen? who signed with a mark. This deed was registered 1 July 1761. There is a 17 in the margin; perhaps indicates the deed number. The deed mentions quitrents to March 1749. On 25 Feb. 1760 William Ross Sr., planter & his wife Elizabeth of Tyrrell sold 50 acres to William Ross Jr. of same for 30 pounds proclamation money. The land joined the lines of Peter Stansill, John Gorham, Smithwick, John Dugan, John Ross. It included "my house and plantation where the aforesaid William Ross Junr now lives." Quit rents were due to the 25th of March 1749. The sale was witnessed by Edward Smithwick and John Ross. Elizabeth Ross was examined by Edward Smithwick one of the Justices in the September term 1760. The deed was registered 2 June 1761. This deed also has a 17 written in the margin. Another deed from William Ross Sr. to John Ross is found on page 16 and 17 with a date of 2 Feb. 1760. The description is exactly the same as the 25 Feb. deed listed above. This deed is registered 2 July 1761. Edmund Smithwick again signs it, but Elizabeths' name appears now to be Willipen or Willissen (probably the latter and no mark is mentioned. The number in the margin is 23. He died after 25 Feb 1760 in Martin Co. NC.31,1425,1433 William Sr. was still living 25 Feb. when he sold land to William Ross Jr. In Edgecombe Co. Dec. 8, 1760, a William Ross's will was signed and proven in court in December 17__, Bk A. , pg. 7. Wife and Executrix was Elizabeth (which works for our William). 1760. It is not clear whether this is the same William. From Martin County History Vol I by Francis M Manning & W H Booker p223. William Ross of Martin County was the son of William Ross Sr, formerly of the State of Virginia, who came to North Carolina, and settled in Martin County (the islands section of what is now known as Williams Township). His son (William Jr), father of ten children listed below, was born on the 9th of August, 1731, and departed this life on December 25, 1801. "William Ross, Senior, [apparently talking about the next William, husband of Mary Griffin] was successful in accumulating property and he became quite prosperous selling products of the farm to traders from New England who ascended the Roanoke in their vessels. All this prosperity vanished, however, at the commencement of the Revolutionary War. Trade of all kinds was paralyzed and at the close of the eventful period, he found himself a poor man with a comparatively large family to provide for. Yet he was never heard to complain on account of his changed circumstances, but rather rejoice that by the sacrifice of his property and by the sending of his three sons, William, John, and Martin into the army, he had contributed his mite to obtain the priceless blessings of freedom." Deed B-241 describes a dispute of dividing line between William Ross, Sr. and William Duggan, William Swain, and others in 1789. William Human made oath he had set out the line when Edmund Smithwick sold the land to old John Duggan and old William Ross some 20 or 30 years earlier. John Ross and William Ross came in right of their father. Spouse: Elizabeth (ROSS). Children were: William ROSS, Hugh ROSS, John ROSS, Nathan ROSS. William ROSS1434 was born on 9 Aug 1731 in Martin Co. NC.448 All birth dates for William Ross' children come from Martin County History. I interpret the writeup as William Ross and his children were born in Martin County, but not at all certain. John Palmer states that the IGI has the same birthdate for William Ross, but has him born in Scotland. He was living between 1787 and 1800 in Martin Co. NC.1291,1340,1341 William Ross lived next door to Jacob Tyce and Martin Ross in the 1787 census. Also on that page were several Bennetts, Mizells, Smithwicks, Gardner, and Reddicks. William was listed with one male 21+, three males under 21 or over 60, and four females, plus 5 slaves. The males works well with William, but it seems rather late to have three daughters at home. Perhaps one or more were daughter-in-laws. The other William Ross in the 1787 census does not have slaves. In 1790, William has one male over 16, three under 16, four females, and five slaves. Son Reuben and Nathan would have been under 16 at that time. Perhaps the third male is a grandson - perhaps Godfrey Ross, who is the only grandson mentioned in the will. Patsey would definitely still have been home; which other two of the daughters is at home (or a daughter-in-law) is unknown. In 1800, William Ross senr. was 45+. He had one male 26-45 and one female in the same category, as well as a female (his wife) over 45. He had one male and one female under 10. Of his children, the following names appeared in the census: John, 26-45; James, 26-45; Nathan, 26-45; Reuben, 16-26. Martin Ross had moved to Perquimons Co. William Ross was likely the male 26-45 living with William Senr. The only Ross's in Martin Co. in 1800 that were not members of William's family were: Joseph (45+), Luke (16-26), and Thomas (26-45). Luke and Thomas were probably sons of John Ross, now deceased. He died in Dec 1801 in Martin Co. NC.1435 He signed a will on 20 Dec 1801 in Martin Co. NC. Sons John Ross,Wm Ross, Martin Ross, James Ross, Nathan Ross, Reuben all bequeathed bed, cows, and furniture which he had previously put into their possession. Daughters Winifred Rogers, Nancy Reddick, Patsey Leddick (L is definitely formed differently than the R in Reddick and Rogers) Grandson Godfrey Ross Negro boy Dussy to wife Mary during her lifetime and then to son James Ross.
