Nancy Ellen ROSS was born in 1837 in Anson Co. NC.^674,906 1850 NC Union Co. census has Ellen age 12.
1860 Henderson Co. census had N.E. age 23.
Think her name is Nancy Ellen Parents: Hugh ROSS and Nancy NASH.

Nathan ROSS was born before 1758. Pure conjecture. Nathan Ross is listed in the 1779 tax list for Martin Co. so he is likely at least 21 (b bef 1758). In 1777, Nathan Ross bought land from Elijah Price where Elijah Price formerly lived and Nathan Ross now lives. John Ross and Elijah Price were witnesses.
He was living in 1787 in Martin Co. NC.¹²⁹¹ In 1787, Nathan is listed near Hugh Ross and Wm Son (of) John Ross and fairly near John Ross Jr. & Sr., Joseph Ross, and Thos. Ross. He has 1 male 21-60 (himself), 5 males under 21 or above 60, and 2 females.

Nathan does not appear in the 1790 or later censuses. Parents: William ROSS and Elizabeth (ROSS).

Nathan ROSS was born on 2 Nov 1773 in Martin Co. NC.⁴⁴⁸ [NEED TO DEFINE SENTENCE: moved]¹³⁷³ "In the year 1805 he settled in the forks of Saline and Hayes Fork Creeks." But according to James Ross, he moved there in 1808, the same year that Reuben moved there from Montgomery Co. This location, at that time, was on the very extreme limits of the white settlements.

According to a Oct 1999 posting on the Martin Co. Rootsweb mail list by TCHOSKI@aol.com, John Stancil and his wife Lydia Cherry also moved to Dover, Stewart Co. TN. Their daughter Margaret married Daniel Cherry in Stewart Co. in 1820. These families lived near the Ross family in Martin Co. He died on 14 Jul 1834 in Stewart Co. TN.^154,1267 Parents: William ROSS and Mary GRIFFIN.

"My grandfather Ross was Nathan Ross, born in Williamston, Martin County, NC,
on the banks of the Roanoke River on November 2nd, 1773. In the year 1805,
he settled in the forks of Saline and Hayes Fork Creeks. He departed July 14,
1834 in Stewart County, TN. Grandfather Ross was married twice--first time to
Miss Lydia Best, and to this union were born twelve children; Jack, Alfred,
Reuben, Nathan, William, Dudley, Benny, Betsy, Polly, Harriet, Etna, and
Mariah. Grandfather's second marriage was to my grandmother, Miss Agnes

Nathan ROSS was born about 1791 in Martin Co. NC.¹³⁷⁴ A Nathan Ross is in the 1850 Union Co. census, family 70. He is listed as being born in Martin Co. and is 59 years old. He would seem to match this Nathan. He appeared in the census in 1830 in Anson Co. NC.¹³⁷⁵ In 1830, Nathan was listed as 30-40, with a female 20-30 and a male under 5. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Union Co. NC.¹³⁷⁶ It is not certain that this is the same Nathan Ross, but it seems to fit. He is listed in Dwelling 70: Nathan Ross, 59, farmer, born Martin County; Susan 39, born Union County; Sarah A. 18, Dennis C. 11, M.A.M 8 (female), all born Union County. Parents: Martin ROSS and Peggy BROWN.

Nathan ROSS¹⁵⁴ was born between 1810 and 1820. Nathan Ross was 20 to 30 in the 1840 census for Stewart Co. Tn. That could not be the senior Nathan, so had to be his son or the son of one of his brothers. The pamphlet says "Uncle Nathan Ross became a lawyer and accumulated a large fortune in Baltimore, MD, and that was the only account we ever had of him." Parents: Nathan ROSS and Lydia BEST.

Neden ROSS was born about 1846 in Henderson Co. TN. Name was not decipherable in 1850 census. A biography of Stephen L. Ross in Tennessee Legislators lists her name as Neden, born c. 1846. Parents: Stephen Lacy ROSS and Eliza (ROSS).

Olley Minerva ROSS was born in 1841 in Union Co. NC.^167,1377 Ancestral File lists Olley M. Ross born 1842. 1850 census listed Olley M., age 9. Estate papers listed Minerva, married to G. Stegall. Parents: Thomas G ROSS and Ola "Olley" MANESS.

Spouse: Griffin STEGALL. Griffin STEGALL and Olley Minerva ROSS were married on 19 Mar 1860 in Union Co. NC.^167,1153 Griffin Stegall, according to the Union Co. Marriage Index, married Olly Tarlton.

Orine ROSS³³ was born on 11 Nov 1917 in Henderson Co. TN.³³ He died on 17 Dec 1939 in Henderson Co. TN.³³ Dewayne probably died from some combination of appendicitis and strep throat according to his sisters Pearl and Flossie Veteto. He was buried about 17 Dec 1939 in Union Hill Cemetery, Henderson Co. TN.³³ The cemetery marker at Center Hill reads: Orene, 11/11/1917-12/17/1939, "Son" footstone. He is buried next to William R. and Dovey Ross. Parents: William Riley Andrew ROSS and Dovie Dossphine ROSS.

Oscar Turner ROSS was born on 3 Jul 1884.¹⁰⁰ He died on 5 Mar 1964 in Trigg Co. KY.¹⁰⁰ Parents: Rev. James Mathis ROSS and Amanda FUTRELL.

Otis K. ROSS was born on 4 Mar 1910 in Henderson Co. TN.^409,522,1378 1910 census taken April 22 1910 and he is 11 months. Harry Ross provides his bith dates as 4 Mar 1910, as does his headstone.

He died on 2 May 1968 in Henderson Co. TN.⁵²² He was buried in Lexington Cemetery.⁵²² Parents: Silas Hosea ROSS and Mintie E. GILLIAM.

Pauline (Polly?) ROSS was born about 1792 in NC.¹³⁷⁹ Are Pauline and Mary Ross the same person? Dan Lantner has a Mary, while my records had Pauline or Polly. Heather Parsons lists a Polly and no Pauline Parents: James ROSS and Lydia Elizabeth COBURN.

Penelope ROSS was born about 1867 in TN.¹³⁸⁰ Penelope was probably named after her aunt. Parents: Callum ROSS and Nancy MOORE.

Penelope Ann ROSS was born on 2 Feb 1846 in Union Co. NC.^292,674,1236 The 1850 census lists Penelope A 4. Dugall's pension lists her birth as Feb 2-1846. In 1880 census Penelope Haney 35, is living next to Dugall Ross. Parents: Dugal Washington ROSS and Penelope Allen MOORE.

NC.¹³⁶² "Experiencing difficulties in his mercantile venture, Reuben Ross left Williamston on May 6, 1807. It was the last night in the county for the elder's family with a relative, Charles Cherry, the husband of Mildred Yarrell Ross's sister, Rosa Yarrell Cherry. They spent the night, with others making the journey to Cumberland, Tenn." He was living after 1807 in Cumberland Co, TN.¹³⁶² He was living between 1808 and 1812 in Stewart Co. TN.¹³⁸² He died on 28 Jan 1860 in Montgomery Co. TN.^1383,1384 Elder Reuben Ross died in the home of his daughter Morrison from the effects of a fall suffered 19 January 1860. He was buried in Jan 1868 in Clarksville, Montgomery Co. Tennessee.¹³⁸⁵ "His eyes first saw the light in North Carolina. The greater part of his life was spent in Tennessee, and he died in Kentucky. His body was conveyed to his former home near Clarksville, Tennnessee, and buried by the wife of his youth, under the spreading branches of a nobel oak, and not far off a cluster of cedars, ever green, fit emblem of immortality."

Reuben Ross was ordained into the Ministry in Blooming Grove Primitive Baptist Church, Weakley Co., in 1834. He organized the Sandy Branch Primitive Baptist Church near Dresden, Tenn. in 1840 and serve there as pastor until his death in 1884. Parents: Thomas ROSS.

Reuben R. ROSS was born on 17 Apr 1830 in Montgomery Co. TN.¹²⁶⁵ He was educated at Masonic College about 1850 in Clarksville, Montgomery Co. Tennessee.¹²⁶⁵ He studied under his father, Professor James Ross, at the Masonic College prior to his appointment to West Point Military Academy. He graduated in 1853 in West Point Military Academy.¹²⁶⁵ He served in the military in 1861.¹³³⁹ He apparently entered Confederate Service soon after the war broke out and became Captain of the Maury County Tenn. Artillery. He was later commissioned a Brigadier General and commanded a brigade in General Bragg's army.

"After the surrender of the Confederate Army at Fort Donelson, Captain Ross was sent, with other prisoners of war, to St. Louis, where General Schofield [a former classmate and friend at West Point] showed him much kindness, taking the gloves from his own hands and giving them to his old classmate and friend in misfortune. General Schofield also procured him parole, upon which he returned home. ...He took part afterwards in several bloody battles, and was severely wounded in the thigh. It was said of him that 'he never knew when to retreat.'"

"He was again captured in the latter part of the war, and, while being carried north, jumped from the moving train near Cincinnati; and, although badly hurt, he escaped. Returning South, he met General H. B. Lyon, C.S.A, a former classmate at West Point, who persuaded him to go with his command upon a raid he was then making into Kentucky. During that raid General Ross was overpowered and mortally wounded in a hand-to-hand encounter, dying a few days later - Dec. 16, 1864 - at Hopkinsville, Ky. His wife and father brought his remains to the family burying ground at Meriville, where he now rests beside his parents, sister, and five gallant soldiers of the Confederate States Army," He died on 16 Dec 1864 in Hopkinsville KY.¹³³⁹ He was buried in 1865 in Meriville, Montgomery Co. Ross, born Jany 6th, 1886; Resia E. Ross, born Novr 26th 1887, and Wm R. Ross, born Feby 9th 1896. Dugall's application dated Jan. 15, 1898, gave here bith date as Nov. 25/87. Rosie's application for Social Security account gave her date of birth as 11-26-1888. She died in 1971.¹³⁹¹ She was buried in 1971 in Shiloh Church Cemetery, Reagan, Henderson Co. TN.¹³⁹¹ A single headstone with ROSS has the captions for Rosie and Sol: ROSIE E; 1888-1971 and SOL F.; 1887-1956 She was also known as Resia & Rosa.⁵³⁶ Name was listed as Rosa, but 1900 census has it as Rossie E. Parents: Dugal Washington ROSS and Nancy Jane JOHNSON.

Sarah ROSS^292,1249 was born between 1825 and 1830 in Anson Co. NC.¹³⁹⁵ She was listed 6th in Dugal's will, indicating she was probably the sixth daughter. She and the youngest (Martha) were also given $40 to make them equal with his other daughters to whom he had already given some property, indicating the other daughters were already married when the will was written in 1843.
The 1840 census lists Dugal Ross with 2 females 10-15, one of which would be her.
The 1870 census lists her age as 53, which would make her born 1817. She died before Jan 1881 in Union Co. NC.¹⁴⁵ Parents: Dougal M. ROSS and Jemima BREWER.

NC.^145,1396 In the petition for final settlement of Dugald Ross's estate, Ennis Staton is listed as the surviving husband of Sarah Staton.
