Beauchamp, age 3, nephew. He appeared in the census in 1920 in Henderson Co. TN.1309 In the 1920 census, Hugh M. Ross is listed in Henderson Co. ED 5, sheet 6. He is 68 (1852), born in NC; wife Francis is 70. He died on 20 Jul 1927 in Chester Co. TN.129 He was buried about 20 Jul 1927 in Roby Cemetery, Chester Co. Hugh Menenol ROSS was born on 6 Mar 1827 in North Carolina.1311,1312 He appeared in the census in 1860 in Henderson Co. TN.1311 In 1860, H.M. Ross, age 27 born North Carolina, was head of household 1135 in Center Point, next door to Hugh Ross, age 68, and Nancy Ross, age 57. With H.M. was Elizabeth 25 b KY, J.C. 6 b TN, and S.S. 1 b TN, both males.
In 1850 in Union Co., Hugh had a male age 17 living with him, but this child was named James. In 1840, there were two males of the right age for H.M. and James. Perhaps, in 1850, H.M. was living somewhere else, especially if he was 23 as the age on his tombstone indicates.
He died on 16 May 1902 in Gilmer, Upshur Co. TX.1312 He was buried about 16 May 1902 in Enon Cemetery, Gilmer, Upshur Co. TX.1312 I only had initials for Hugh, but Julian Pool and Louise Pool Odom both say his name was Hugh Menenol Ross. Parents: Hugh ROSS and Nancy NASH.

James ROSS79,290 was born on 8 Jun 1761 in Martin Co. NC.290 In his pension statement, James says he was born in Martin Co. in 1761, but Martin Co. was not formed until 1774. He would most likely have been born in Halifax or Tyrell Co., from which Martin Co. was formed. However, it is even possible he was born in Edgecombe or Pitt Co. since there have been line changes with those two counties. He served in the military in Feb 1781 in Martin Co. NC.290,1315 Pension application says he enlisted and served as private sometime in February 1781 to sometime in July, 1781, under Captains John Kennady and James Evans in Colonel Whitmill Hills Regiment and was in the battle of Guilford Court House and the battle of Camden in April, 1781,...
John Kennedy had land on Flat Swamp and Turkey Swamp - names mentioned in Ross deeds.
Jas Ross is listed in the Roster of NC Soldiers as enlisting in 1781 in Lytle's Company. He lived Martin Co. NC in Martin Co. NC before 1798. He lived Anson Co. NC in Anson Co. NC after 1798.290 James must have moved to Anson in 1798 or 99, based upon his pension claim that he had moved to Anson "33 years before" and his application was made in 1832. His brother William said that James moved to Anson in 1798 and he followed in 1799. In the 1790 census the Ross name (James, Thomas, Martha, Joseph) was found in close proximity to several Brewer (Edmund, James, Mary, Sarah) and Cobern (Griffin, Andrew, John, Francis, James, Abner, George) in Martin Co. page 67. Martin and William Ross were on page 66. Another James Ross, along with William, and John Ross (2) and Moses Moore were found on page 69. This latter James Ross had two sons under 16 while the James Ross on page 67 had no males other than himself.
In the 1800 census, James, John, and William Ross are listed on the same page in Martin Co. A James Ross is listed on page 209 of the Anson census. Andrew, Daniel, Griffin, Gustavas, Henry, Hugh (2), Martin, Silvey, Walter are listed in Anson.

In 1810 Jas Ross was listed as 45+, with one female 26-45. He had two males 16-26 (b 1785-1795; Dougal, Hugh, and/or Francis) and one male under 10 (b 1800-1810; Thomas G.), 3 females under 10 (b 1800-10; Lydia, Spicy, and Sarah), one female 10-16 (b 1794-1800; Nancy), and one 16-26 (b 1784-1794; Polly). This assumes Margaret was born after 1810 and Dougal, Hugh or Francis was living elsewhere. Note conflicts with 1800 census.
In 1820, Jas Ross is listed with 1 male 10-16 (b 1804-1810; Thomas G.), and himself over 45; one female over 45, one 10-16 (b 1804-1810; Margaret probably), and two 16-26; 1794-1804; Lydia, Spicy or Sarah). He appeared in the census in 1840 in Anson Co. NC. In the 1840 census, one James Ross is listed on pg 98 next door to Dugald. This family has 1 male 70-80 (which would make him born 1760-1770), 1 40-50, 1 15-20, 1 10-15, 2 5-10, 2 <5. Females listed are 1 60-70, 1 30-40, 1 15-20, 2 10-15, 1 <5 He died on 1 Jan 1849 in Union Co. NC.295 He was buried in Ennis Staton Cem, Union Co, NC.489 William Ross' statement April 9, 1851, to support Liddy Ross' pension application, listed all of their 11 children: Elizabeth, Dugal, Polly, Nancy, Hugh, Francis, Liddy, Spicy, Sarah, Thomas, and Margret. He said they moved to Anson County into 98 and "my self and fathers family moved to Anson now Union County in the date of Seventeen hundred and ninety nine.."
Hugh Ross made a deed of gift of a Negro boy to Martin Ross and James Ross. Two weeks later he mad another deed of gift to Wm, David, and Griffin Ross. It appears that all are children of Hugh. See Hugh Ross notes and sources.

James ROSS was born before 1769 in Martin Co. NC. In 1790, there were two James Rosses in Martin Co. One was next to John Ross and was between 21-65 (b bef 1769). He had two males under 21 or over 65 and one female. The other James was listed as between 21-65 with three females. There is no record of a second James Ross in Anson Co. until 1820. He appeared in the census in 1820 in Anson Co. NC. I have ruled out this James Ross as our direct line because our James Ross had a brother named William still living in 1840 when James applies for his RW pension and this James' brother William was deceased. It is very possible that this James Ross is the one who provided evidence for Lydia Coburn Ross's widow's pension. That James Ross said he was 85 years old (in Jan. 1851) and he knew James Ross and Lydia Coburn in Martin Co. A Henry Ross was in Anson Co. in 1800, so perhaps some of this family moved with our line. Parents: John ROSS and Elizabeth BENNETT.

TN, there is a J.S. Ross, age 27, b NC, living in dwelling 1234. With him are M.S. (f) 30 b NC, Louisa 7, W.F. 5 M, N.J. 3 F, Hugh 2, all born TN.
In Union Co. NC (pg 772, household 599) there is a James J. Ross living next to Ennis Staton. James is 29. With him are Laura 33, Martha A. 3, and Sarah S 2. Parents: Hugh ROSS and Nancy NASH.

James Harold ROSS was born on 31 May 1918.522 He served in the military between 1939 and 1959.522 James served in the Navy from 1939 to 1959. He was on the USS Enterprise when Pearl Harbor was bombed, but the ship was delayed due to bad weather. He died on 6 Dec 1968 in El Paso TX.522 He was buried in Ft. James J. ROSS was born about 1854 in TN.1323 James J. Ross was 16 in the 1870 census. He was also known as James Ervin.1324 He was buried in Latch.1324 According to Julian Pool, James J. Ross, age 16 in the 1870 census, was actually James Ervin Ross. Julian says James died young and is buried near Elizabeth in a private cemetery at Latch. James Moses ROSS was born on 13 Jul 1847 in Union Co. NC.674,1325 The 1850 census lists James M age 3 and J.M. age 13 in 1860 (although the J. looks more like an I when compared to the other J's). This may be Moses. But he is not listed as one of Dugall's living children in his pension application, so he must have died. He also is not living in the Dugal Ross household in 1870.
The bible record lists the birthdate of James M. Ross as July the 13th A D 1847.
He died before 4 Aug 1898 in Henderson Co. TN.1236 James M. and Moses may be the same person. He was listed in the 1860 census as James M., but was not listed in the 1870 census. During the Civil War, Dugall wrote Penny "I have seen a heap of trouble about you all and particular about Moses and John for fear the Rebels had conscripted them but I hope to reach home before long and to find you all there and well with something to eat and wear." He was not listed as one of Dugall's living children in the pension statement dated Aug. 4, 1898.
There is a final settlement listed for J.M. Ross, Nov. 20, 1879, in Henderson County Administations and Executive Settlements. "By cash W.C. Christopher, gdn of minor heirs, pg. 38. B. F. Wallace. Gdn Sallie Ross." This needs more work.

TN.1326 Jms Saml Ross, 23, is listed several households away from Wm Thos Ross. With him are wife Louisa, 24, and son E. Harvey, 4. He owned bought land from M.A. Maness adjancent to land formerly owned by Cally Ross. on 15 Jan 1883 in Henderson Co. TN.1327 The land was described as 150 acre tract bordered by land formerly owned by Cally Ross, and land owned by E. Goff, thenorthwest corner of a small tract known as the Shilo Church house land, John Morgan's line, Mary Ricketts, and Crivens Creek. Parents: Callum ROSS and Nancy MOORE.

At one time I believed that Jemima married Jesse Taylor. In 1840, Jesse Taylor,
age 20-30, was in Anson Co. on pg 60. Female 15 to 20 (which would make her
born 1820-1825), 2 male children under 5. But there is also a female 15-20 living
with Dugald Ross.
In Henderson Co. at Jacks Creek in 1860 census is J.J. Taylor (age 40) family
which included Jemima age 39, Stephen 22, L.B, 20 all born NC. Also had Mary
A 17, S.J.0 15 (F), W.J. 13, Penelope 11, A.J. 9 all born Ala., and G.W. 7 born
TN.
However, the settlement of the senior Dugald Ross's estate in 1881 listed the
heirs of Jemima Bennett, wife of John Bennett.

He served in the military between 1776 and 1781 in North Carolina.400 According to North Carolina Revolutionary Soldiers, Sailors, Patriots, & Descendants, John Ross served as a Private in North Carolina in the war. But was it this John Ross? He appeared in the census in 1787 in Martin Co. NC. In an undesignated district in 1787, but possibly District 7, there was a John Ross Sr with himself and 4 males under 21/over 60, 4 females, and 5 total Blacks. There was a John Ross Jr. with himself and 2 males under 21/over 60 and three females.
In 1790, John Ross had two males over 16 (himself and Henry?), one male under 16 (likely Luke), five females (his wife and all four daughters?) and six slaves. John Ross Jr. had one male over 16 (himself), one under 16, and two females.
He signed a will on 9 Oct 1792 in Martin Co. NC. John Ross Sr's will was signed 9 October 1792. Did not name wife. Mentioned sons William (deceased), John (deceased), James, Thomas, Henry, and Luke. The will was probated in June 1794. He died about May 1794 in Martin Co. NC.1331 It is not proven that this John is a son of William Ross. That William Ross had a son named John is proven in a deed settling a dispute of the dividing line between William Ross Sr. and William Duggan, William Swain, and others. William Hyman made an oath that he was first sent out when old Edmund Smithwick who sold the land to old John Duggan and old William Ross for the purpose of making the dividing line between Duggan and Ross. The line had stood between twenty and thirty years (taking it back to 1739-1749). John Ross and William Ross came in right to the land from their father. Parents: William ROSS and Elizabeth (ROSS).
