Henry is listed on pg 208, James Ross is listed on 209, and Hugh Ross is on 205. Henry does not show up in either county in 1810 or thereafter. Since Henry was listed in the will after Thomas, it is likely he was born after Thomas. Parents: John ROSS and Elizabeth BENNETT. Henry A. ROSS. Parents: Hugh M. ROSS and Frances Cordilla BEECHUM. TN.32 Parents: William H. ROSS and Mary C. (B.?) (ROSS). Hosea Thomas ROSS1285 was born on 17 Jul 1844 in Union Co. NC.1286,1287,1288 The 1850 census listed Thomas H. Ross as age 6; 1860 census listed him as Thomas H. age 17. In 1870, three households away from Thomas Ross was Thomas W. Ross, age 25 and wife Sarah. He died on 5 Aug 1910 in Union Co. NC.1289 He was buried in Traywick Fam Cem, Union Co, NC.1289 Census records from 1850 through 1870 listed Hosea as Thomas H. Ross (and even Thomas W. Ross in 1870). Subsequent deeds, the Thomas G. Ross settlement papers, and the Dower deed of Unicy Ross lists him as Hosea T. Ross. The bible record quoted by the Ross Papers also lists him as Hosea Thomas Ross and provides his birthdate, along with that of Sarah Catherine Traywick and their children. Hugh ROSS1290,1291 was born before 1741. Estimating date of birth based on James' birth date. He owned Bought 365a on 22 Aug 1761 in Martin Co. NC.1292 Elias Leggett sold Hugh Ross 365 acres, where he (Leggett) lived, for 44 lbs. Leggett reserved 10 feet square in the center near a walnut tree. Possibly Leggett reserved the area where someone was buried. The deed was witnessed by John Ross, James Leggett, and William Ros. Another deed 24 Dec 1761 from Thomas Bennet Sr. to Dennis Glisson of Pitt Co. is for land adjoining Stansell, Gardener, Smithwick, the woodyard, Hugh Ros. [169-(228)] In 1764, Hugh Ross, along with James Ross, and Luke Bennet winess sale by John Bennet to John Ross. [341-(445).] He was living in 1779 in Martin Co. NC.1293 He appeared in the census in 1787 in Martin Co. NC.1291 The 1787 State Census for North Carolina lists Hugh Ross with 3 males 21-60, 6 males under 21 or over 60, 9 females, 1 black 12-50, 1 black under 12 or over 50. In the same district are John Ross Sr (near the Cockburns), John Ross Jr., Joseph Ross, Thos. Ross, Nathan Ross (three away from Hugh), Wm son (of) John Ross, William Ross, and James Ross Sr. Further away, but apparently in same district, are William Ross and Martin Ross who live next door to each other. He appeared in the census in 1790 in Martin Co. NC. In the 1790 census, Hugh Ross' family had greatly declined. Now there are 2 males over 16, 1 under 16, and 2 females. There were now 3 slaves. He died in 1809 in Anson Co. NC.1294 Hugh made two deeds of gift in May 1808 which were to take place after the decease of himself and his wife. The gifts were proved in court Oct. 1809 which might mean he had died. The best evidence connecting Hugh Ross to James, Griffin, William, David, and Martin is the deeds of Anson Co. Hugh Ross, who signs with a mark in Martin Co. and in Anson Co., deeds land to sons Griffin and David 9-28-1804; John Bennett (who according to another deed is from Martin Co.) is one of the witnesses. Hugh makes deed of gift of Negro girl Violet to Stephen Hasty 8-6-1805 (perhaps son-in-law). On 5-8-1808 he makes deed of gift of Negro boy named Dick to Martin Ross and James Ross. On 5-20-1808 he deeds Negro girl named Penny plus cattle, household items etc. to Wm. Ross & David Ross & Griffin Ross. In 1779 there were 5 Ross adult males listed in the Martin Co. NC taxables list: John, Hugh, Nathan in District 5 and William and John son of Wm in District 2. James would have been 18 at this time and was not listed. In the 1779 Martin Co. Tax List, John Ross, Hugh Ross, Wm Brewer Sr, John Lewis, Wm Whitfield, Stapleton Bonner, George Cockburn Sr, John Brewer, John Joyce, Francis Cockburn, Benjn Blout, John Griffin, Septimus Nowell, and Nathan Ross were listed in that order in District 3. The proximity of Francis Cockburn, future father-in-law to James Ross, to John, Hugh, and Nathan makes them likely candidates for James' father. John dies in 1792 and leaves a will naming his children, so he is eliminated. Nathan Ross disappears between the 1787 tax list and the 1790 census. He does not appear in the 1790 and subsequent censuses. William Ross in District 2 is almost surely the one who leaves a will in 1801 and thus is not a candidate to be James' father. In 1790, there were two major groupings of Ross's in Martin Co. The first group had Thomas (#247 - 1M>16, 2<16, 2 F), Joseph (Household #250 - 1, 0, 3), Hugh (#255 - 2,1, 2 and 3 slaves), Martha (#273 - 0, 3, 3), and James (#288 - 1,0, 3). This group lived within a group of Brewers and Coburns. Nathan Ross has disappeared; since not many (if any) new names appearThis James would be the most probable for our ancestor since he married Lydia Coburn, whose father Francis lived nearby. The second group had John (#608 - 2,1, 5 and 6 slaves), James (#609 - 1,2 1), Martin (#612 - 1,2, 1), John Jr. (#614 - 1,1, 2), and William (#616 - 1,1 3). Much further away was Martin Ross (#4 - 1,4, 3 and 12 slaves) and William Ross (#100 - 1,3, 4 and 5 slaves). I believe James Ross should have had 1 male and 1 female child in 1790, possibly more - so neither family exactly fits him; perhaps they recorded the sex of one of the children incorrectly. William Ross (James' brother) would have been 20 according to the pension statement he later made. It is possible he is #616, but it seems unlikely that he would have this many people in the household at the young age of 20. This William is likely the oldest son of William Ross And Elizabeth Griffin - the William who dies in 1801. William Sr is listed as William Ross on the next list, holding 5 slaves. There is no other William. Thus, it appears likely James' brother William is living with Hugh or John (the only two who have 2 males over 16). In 1800, there is still no trace of William Ross. There is a William Sr. living in Martin Co. with one male 45+ and one 26-45. This would be William Ross who died in 1801 in Martin Co. The 26-45 year old man with William is probably his son William, as all his other sons are accounted for. James' brother William's pension statement claims he and his father moved to Anson in 1799, but there is no William in the 1800 census in Anson and no likely candidate for him to be living with. Hugh Ross is shown as 26-45 with wife 16-26 and 2 slaves. This age does not work for father of James but the slaves are close to what Hugh had in 1790. Griffin is 16-25 with wife of same age. There is no David Ross and no William Ross. James is 26-45 with wife and 9 children (probably ours). Henry is 26-45 with wife same age and 3 female children. Martin is 26-45 with wife same age and 6 children. Parents: William ROSS and Elizabeth (ROSS). Children were: James ROSS, Martin ROSS, William ROSS, Griffin ROSS, David ROSS, Living. Hugh ROSS was born before 1745 in Scotland. Assuming Hugh was at least 20 when his son Donald was born would mean he was born before 1745. He immigrated between 1767 and 1775. Base his immigration date on birth of youngest son (who was born in Scotland) and land grant in Anson Co. in 1775. He was living on 4 Mar 1775 in Anson Co. NC.1295 Hugh Ross is granted land on Buffalo Creek 4 March 1775. (per John Palmer) The name of Hugh Ross first appears as a seller in the Anson County Deed Books Apr 7, 1787 (Bk H, pg 50) when he sells land on White Oak Branch to Peter Winfield. There is one more sale pre-1790 on Buffalow Creek (Nov. 18, 1788; Book B#2, pg 206). There are more sales: 1799, 1800, 1804, 1812, 1829, 1841. It is presumed all of these are by a different Hugh Ross since this Hugh Ross presumably died in 1793. The later Hugh could be his son or the Hugh Ross from Martin Co. He owned Property restored in Nov 1787 in Anson Co. NC.1296 There are several records of Hugh's petition for restoration of his property: Vol 18, pg 146, Senate Papers, Friday Dec 22 1786; pg 178; pg 224, pg 395, pg 445 his petition was passed on readings. Vol 18, Pg 202, Jan 2, 1786, his petition was reported out of committee: "Mr. Tipton delivered the following reports. The Committee of Petitions and Memorials to whom was referred the petition of Hugh Ross, praying that his estate be restored to him, which is confiscated, report, that they are of opiniion that the said Ross was in a manner frightened away from his habitation by a set of men who, calling themselves Friends to America, tied him and whipped him for being a tory. Your Committe are therefore of opinion that the said Ross (being a poor ignorant man) be restored to his property, and that the commisssioner of confiscated estates be directed not to make sale and the same is hereby fully vested in him..." If it has already been sold, he would get the proceeds. He owned Bought land from John Purviance on 16 May 1791 in Iredell Co. NC.1297 Hugh Ross bought 383 acres in Iredell Co. from John Purviance 16 May 1791. First tract was 285 acres on N side of Catawba R adj to Nicholas Massy. Second tract was 80 acres on N side of Purviance on Catawba R below Island Ford & adj. Chas. McDonald. Third tract was 18 acres on lower end Island Ford of Catawba R opposite Chas. McDonald. Deed A:277-279. He signed a will on 18 Nov 1793 in Anson Co. NC. Leaves wife Margaret use of negro George and allows "her the use in conjunction with my sons of my plantation in Iredell County if she chooses to live thereon with them.." Daughters Mary, Jean, Katherine (at least one of whom is under 18) Daughter Margaret Campbell Leaves to sons Donald and Hugh the remainder of his estate, "my lands in this county and also in Iredell" Wife Margaret and sons Donald and Hugh executors. Witnessed by Charles Porter and John Tison He died before Nov 1796 in Anson Co. NC.1298 Hugh Ross, in a will dated 1793, willed his land in Iredell Co. to sons Hugh and Donald. This sale in 1796 indicates Hugh had died. It is believed that this Hugh Ross is not part of our family. He was in Anson Co. in the 1790 census while our family was still in Martin Co. Spouse: Margaret MCDONALD. Children were: Donald ROSS, Hugh ROSS II, Jean (Jane) ROSS, Katherine (Catherine) ROSS, Margaret ROSS. Hugh ROSS II was born on 8 Jun 1767 in Scotland.1299,1300 Must have been 21 when he was named executor of his father's will in 1793. If the Hugh Ross who dies in TN in 1849, then he was born between 1760-1770. This same Hugh Ross was listed in the mortality schedule for 1850 as age 82. John Palmer provides his birth date as 8 June 1767 He appeared in the census in 1820 in Humphreys Co. TN.1301 He appeared in the census in 1830 in Henderson Co. TN.1302 I have no proof this Hugh Ross is the one from NC, but it looks very likely. His death record states he was born in Scotland. John Palmer has researched this line and states that this is the Hugh Ross from Anson Co. Hugh is listed with 3 males 15-20, 1 30-40, 1 60-70 and 1 female 10-15, 1 20-30, 1 50-60. He appeared in the census in 1840 in Henderson Co. TN. Hugh Ross is listed in census with 2 males 20-30; 1 70-80; 1 female 20-30; 1 60-70, and 25 slaves. Four pages away is Stephen L. Ross, 20-30. Three pages on the other side is Reuben Ross 20-30. He died in Nov 1849 in Henderson Co. TN.1303 The 1850 mortality census lists Hugh Ross, age 82, Widow, born in Scotland, died of chill in November after being ill for 3 days. All children and spouses named by John T. Palmer. Do not know exact sources but he lists A Genealogy of Thomas and Kessiah Griffith Lacy and Hugh and Margaret McDonald Ross of Anson County NC by John F. Morrison Jr and Janie May Morrison The Ross Family by Sam W. Ross, DEC 1934 He has David Ross listed under this Hugh, but ages preclude that relationship. However, I am leaving him here (and also linked to the other Hugh) until the relationship is clarified. Parents: Hugh ROSS and Margaret MCDONALD. Children were: Hugh ROSS, Donald ROSS, Anna ROSS, Keziah ROSS. Spouse: Lucretia LACY. Hugh ROSS II and Lucretia LACY were married on 18 Feb 1800 in Anson Co. NC.559 John Palmer states that Lucretia was probably a second wife of Hugh Ross. The date is from David Donahue's Lacy information on the Henderson Co. Web Page Children were: Griffith L.(S?) ROSS, Stephen Lacy ROSS, William McDonald ROSS, Thomas Lacy ROSS. Hugh ROSS was born about 1793.1304 Heather Parsons listed his birth as 1803 and Dan Lantner listed it as 1801. But: 1850 census for Union Co. NC had Hugh Ross age 56, Nancy 48, James 17, Jesse 13, Ellin 12, Caswell 10, Lydia 8. The Henderson Co. TN 1860 census has :175-274 Hugh Ross, age 68, Nancy 57, N.E. 23(f), Caswell 21, L.E. 18(f), W. C. 11 (m), Josiah 9, C. J. 7(f) just next door to Dougle Ross (176-274). Ancestral File has him born about 1801. He appeared in the census between 1820 and 1840 in Anson Co. NC. In 1820 Anson Co. census, Dugald, Francis, Hugh, and James are listed on Negro Head. Hugh is 26-45 (1775-1794) and has 1 female 16-26 (1794-1804). With them are 1 male under 10 (1810-1820), and 1 female under 10 (1810-1820). In the 1840 Anson Co. census, Hugh was 50-60 (1780-1790) and has 1 female 30-40. With them are 1 m 15-20 (b 1820-25); 1 m 10-15 (b 1825-30); 2 m 5-10 (1830-35); 2M under 5 (1835-40), 1 f 20-30 (1810-20) ; 1 f under 5 (1835-40) He appeared in the census in 1850 in Union Co. NC.1305 In the 1850 Union Co. census, Hugh was 56 (abt 1794) and his wife Nancy 48 (abt 1802). With them were James 17 (1833), Jesse 15 (1835), Ellen 12, Caswell 10 (1840), and Lydia 8 (1842). He was living in 1860 in Henderson Co. TN.329 On 19 Dec 1859, Hugh Ross " of the county of Henderson and state of Tennessee" sold 9 acres on Lanes Creek adjoining the land of James R. Duncan to James R. Duncan for $1.00. The land was part of a 410 acre grant to Charles Taylor, Patent 2486. Witnesses were Wm L Stegall, Hosea Preslar, and M.G. Stegall. (Deed Bk 5, pg 762) In the 1860 census, he was living in Henderson Co. TN and was listed as 68 (1792). With him were wife Nancy, 47, and children N. E. (female) 23, Caswell 21, S.E. (female) 18, W.C. 11, Josiah 9, and C.J. (female) 7. All children were listed as born in NC, so he moved there in 1853 or later. H. M? Ross age 27 (1833) is next door to Hugh Ross. Dougle W. Ross and Orpha Holmes are listed on the next page. Parents: James ROSS and Lydia Elizabeth COBURN. Spouse: Nancy NASH. Hugh ROSS and Nancy NASH were married.1156 There is confusion on which Hugh Ross married Nancy
Nash. Mary Ann Nichols provided a listing out of the Allen Family Bible which
gives the birth dates of all of the children of Donald Ross. Next to Donald's
son Hugh's birthdate she has "m Nancy Nash (d of Michael)." However,
I believe the evidence supports my placing Nancy Nash as the wife of Hugh Ross,
son of James Ross.
Hugh ROSS was born between 1794 and 1800 in Martin Co. NC. In the 1800 census, one male was under 10 and three were 10 to 16. In 1810, there were two males 10-16. Since Hugh is listed last, I am putting him as the one who was under 10, so he would have been born 1794 to 1800. Parents: Martin ROSS and Peggy BROWN. Hugh ROSS was born on 10 Mar 1806. He was living on 29 May 1841 in Crawford Co. GA.1306 Hugh Ross appointed Joseph Allen as power of attorney "for conveyence of any land owned by my mother Nancy Ross deceased." Parents: Donald ROSS and Nancy HOUGH. Hugh ROSS was born about 1833 in Union Co. NC.1270 He was listed as H. and another initial - maybe a D. He was 17. Parents: Samuel ROSS and Sarah YARBOROUGH. |
