Dovy Ida ROSS was born about 1877 in TN.1253,1254 The 1880 census made it appear she was born about 1877, but the 1900 census said she was born Jan.1880. Seems like an odd mistake. Parents: William Thomas ROSS and Mary F UNK(ROSS).

Dudley ROSS. Parents: Nathan ROSS and Lydia BEST.

Dugal Washington ROSS was born on 4 Mar 1821 in Anson Co. NC.1255 He was living on 24 Oct 1853 in Union Co. NC.1256 On Oct. 24, 1853, Dugal W. Ross sold 241 acres on the waters of Bridge Branch to Sheperd Edwards. The land adjoined Clement Dees. At the same time, Cally Ross sold 87 acres adjoining Clement Dees and Dugal P. Ross's old line. Both deeds were witnessed by Joseph Little. Perhaps these sales cleared the way for their move to Tennessee. He was living between 1854 and 1900 in Henderson Co. TN.1257,1258 The 1860 census shows J. F. Ross as 8 and born NC, while M.A. Ross is 6 and b Tennessee, indicating the family must have moved between 1852 when J.F. was born and 1854 when M.A. was born. Dugal's sister Martha and husband Jesse, the J. K. Little family listed at (1079-1130), however, have a daughter Mary Little, age 2, b NC. This seems to indicate the Ross family must, therefore, have moved from NC to TN before the Littles.

More evidence that Dugal was in Henderson by the mid 1850s is in a deed in Henderson Co. from Dugal to John Hodgin for 2-1/2 acres on June 6, 1855.

Penelope and family are listed with Dugal in 1870 census for Henderson Co., Post Office Lexington, 11th Civil District, page 20, Dwelling 127.

The 1880 census has Ducal Ross, age 59, in household 16. With him are wife Nancy J. 29, son Charles T. 17, daughter Malvinia 6 days, and step son Jmes F. McBride age 3.

He served in the military on 19 May 1863 in Henderson Co. TN.1127,1259,1260 Dugal enlisted as a Private, K Company, 7th Tenn Cavalry Volunteers May 1863 for a term of 3 years. By May 1864, he was on the Hospital Muster Roll of the U.S.A. Post Hospital at Paducah KY. He was transferred to Jefferson Barracks, Mo. June 1864. He was disabled with "Chronic Pneumonia contracted since his enlistment." Dugal transferred to 41 Co. 1 Batt'n Veteran Reserve Corps and appeared on their Muster and Descriptive Roll in St. Louis Mo. (The V.R.C. was a corp. made up of disabled soldiers who were able to perform some jobs. ) The muster roll for July 28 looks like it says Camp Cliffborne DC. On Aug. 8, 1864, he was listed on the 1st Batt. Troops V.R.C. muster in Washington D.C. He was mustered out at Camp Chase Ohio on Oct. 2, 1865. He was 42 years old at that time.

Both signed by mark He was described as a 68 year old farmer, 5 foot 7 inches tall, dark complexioned, dark hair and gray eyes on 16 Sep 1889 in Middle Fork, Henderson Co. In the 1910 census, Nancy J. Ross was living In Henderson Co., Civil District 3. She was listed as widow, age 59. Living with her were youngest son William R. A., age 18, and his wife Dovie D., age 16.

He died on 15 Nov 1900 in Henderson Co. TN.536,1255 J.P. Joyce, m.d., filed an affidavit for Nancy Jane Ross's widow's claim. He stated "That he attended Dugall W. Ross in his last sickness and that he died Nov. 15th 1900. That he died of paralysis." He was buried about 16 Nov 1900 in Center Hill Cemetery, Lexington, TN.410,1255 Dugal is buried with a nice marker at Center Hill Cemetery near Lexington. There are many unmarked graves at that cemetery and it seems likely that Penelope might have been buried there, since Nancy Jane was later buried next to her first husband in the McBride Cemetery.

He was also known as Dougal W., Dugall, Dougle W..1262,1263 Several records list Dugall as Dugale M. Ross, but all of his pension papers list him as Dugall W. Ross, including some which appear to be signed by him.

However, a letter written by Dugal August 14 1865, requesting a certificate of discharge was signed Dugal W. Ross.
