TN.1177 Ed shared the following from "Tennessee Roots: Catherine Stewart of Henderson County" by Richard Cratis Wadley and Eunice Stewart Goddard (Norman, OK, 1987). This book describes the "pillow slip papers," the story of which is as follows. Catherine Stewart's oldest daughters, Mahala Caroline (abt. 1827-abt. 1881) and Roseanna Margaret (Peggy)(abt. 1829-aft. 1881) were spinsters and lived together. Some time after their death (and burial in the Preslar cemetery), members of the Stewart family were "wrecking out" the old house where they lived, and found in the attic a dirty old pillow case containing dozens of old and yellowed papers which Catherine had saved, the earliest dated 4 May 1837. Some of the old papers were obviously brought from NC, and many were letters written home by the boys during the Civil War. Amongst the "pillow slip papers" is a three-page document written by Hosea Preslar entitled "A true account of Hosea Preslar's bisness as garddean for Miles T. Little up to the time of my last settlement with the county cort." No other details are given in this book, except that it set forth his expenditures in this connection and stated he "rezined my garddean ship and turned the same over to E.S. Steagall." After him are Margaret Long, Josiah Williams, Walter Ross, Mary Mask, John Davidson, Hugh McDonald, Calvine Martin, Richard Ratliff. The other Andrew Ross is also within 4 places of a William Martin. This Andrew has 3 males under 16 and 3 females. He is preceded by Humphrey, Richard, and William Rogers; Thomas Martin, Aron Tallent Jr., and Beverley Clark. He is followed by William Williams, Walter Leak, William Martin, Richard Griffin, Melton Ponyman. He died before Apr 1803 in Anson Co. NC.1220 Andrew's will names wife Elizabeth and Walter, John, James, and Martin, with no relationship specified. Daughters may be Frances Duckworth, Mary Williams, and Elizabeth Vining. All information from abstract of will provided by Martha Little. Listed four male heirs but did not mention relationship. Assuming them to be sons. The natural assumption is that Walter Ross, the RW pensioner, is the son of this Andrew Ross. However, a book published by John W. Ross in 1978 says that Walter is the son of immigrant Walter Ross. In addition, the White pension abstract for Walter Ross says "also shown was: William Marten m Rebecca daughter of Walter & Margaret Ross 4 July 1784 & their daughter Salley b 16 Sept 1785, Nancey b in 1787, a daughter (name illegible) b in Feb 1792." Our Walter, if born in 1761, could not have had a daughter who married in 1784. Would seem logical that Walter and Rebecca were siblings and perhaps their father was a Walter Ross? Parents: ROSS.
