William LITTLE owned Received Lot No. 5 in Jan 1860 in Union Co. NC.108 Parents: Hosea LITTLE and Mary GREEN. Children were: George LITTLE. William LITTLE676 died about 1816.319 According to Cox, William died about the time he deeded his son George little land on the north side of Grindal Creek bounded by Matthew Hodges and Howel Hodges (Pitt Co. Deed Bk T, pg 155). The writeup in The Thigpen Tribe is unclear on this family and has two James Littles confused. It says James Little married Rebecca Reading and died before 1794, "leaving children: Reading and James Little, Jr, d. 8/4/1799; m. 1st: --Holland; m. 2nd: Mary Hodges: Children (1) William Little; m. --Crandall: " and then lists 13 children as if they are all children of William. This William Little is the progenitor of Edward Cox, author of Our Family Genealogy. Parents: James LITTLE. Spouse: Mary CRANDALL (HODGES). William LITTLE
and Mary CRANDALL (HODGES) were married about 1775.16,319 Mary
Crandall may have first been Mary Hodges.
William LITTLE16 died about 1839.16 Parents: John LITTLE and Mary WILLIAMS. Spouse: Mary (LITTLE). William LITTLE and Mary (LITTLE) were married.16 Children were: Jesse LITTLE, Mary LITTLE. William LITTLE1052,1053,1054 was born in 1640 in Massachusetts - not proved.1055 According to The Thigpen Tribe, William was born in 1660 in Massachusetts. While many researchers have claimed that William Little was transported from Massachusetts to Surry Co. VA, I have found no proof and am unaware of evidence that supports this conclusion. He was living in 1673 in Surry Co. VA. December 12, 1673, a William Little participated in the first tax revolt, led by Matthew Swann. In January 1674, Justices Lawrence Baker and Robert Spencer charged that on 12 December (xber now last past), "a seditious & rude people to ye Number of Fourteen did unlawfully assemble at ye p(ar)ish church of Lawnes Creek, w/ ye Intent to declare they would not pay their public taxes". Persons charged were Matthew Swann, Jno Barnes, Wm Hancock, Wm Teeke, Rob Lacy, Jno Gregroy, Tho Clay, Michl Upchurch, Jno Sheppard, Geo Peeters, Wm Little, Jno Greene, and James Chessett. They apparently expected others to join them who did not and the uprising failed. When they were questioned, they all declared that "if One suffers, they would burn all." They were remanded to custody. Matthew Swann was in April fined 2000 lbs. Is this our William Little's grandfather, his uncle, or someone unrelated? This William Little would probably have been at least 20 by the time of this uprising; thus he would have been born by 1653 - not 1660 as Thigpen Tribe suggests. Actually most of the men were mature men, so it is likely William was born even earlier. He was living on 5 Jun 1684 in Surry Co. VA.1056,1057 The list of Tithables in Lawnes Creek included "Wm. Little, Phil Phryer," indicating Phil Phryer was either an apprentice or servant to William Little. In 1680, William Little was listd with only himself as tithe. He was living on 5 Sep 1687 in Surry Co. VA.1058 In Sept. 1687 William Little was found guilty of not going to church. Convicted with him were Charles Guttrig, John Roberts, Morin Aeanaday, Edward Napkin, and Thomas Hirnt. It is not proven that this is the same William, but being convicted along with Edward Napkin makes it seem more than coincidental. He was living in 1695 in Surry Co. VA.1059 William Little was listed in Lawnes Creek Parish He died about 1699 in Surry Co. VA.1060 William Little was last listed in the Surry County Tithables in 1698, indicating he died or moved away. The earliest record I have found for William Little was in 1673, when he was charged as one of those who took part in the Lawne's Creek Church uprising, the first tax strike in the Colonies. On June 10, 1674, and every year thereafter until 1699, William was listed in a List of Tithables in Lawnes Creek. A John Little started appearing in 1683. In 1687, William Little and Edward Napkin are convicted of not going to church. The 1704 Quit Rent Roll lists no Little nor earlier Tithables Lists, which started in 1663. Parents: Living. William LITTLE29,254,784 was born about 1682 in Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co. VA.354,1061 The Tithables Lists of Surry County indicate William was born in Surry Co. William was listed in 1698 with John and apparently older brother Francis. As this was the first year he was listed, he was likely 16, making him born about 1686. An older William Little, who was listed as early as 1674, was in the same precinct. According to The Thigpen Tribe, this William was born in 1660 in Massachusetts, which may possibly be true for the older William, but not this one. He was living between 1701 and 1703.1061 In 1698, Wm. Little was listed in John Little's household, along with Francis Little (listed before William). In 1701 and 1702, Francis is still there and Robert has now been added, but Wm. is now listed in the household of Nicho. Smith. In 1703 he was listed alone. He was living on 5 Jan 1709 in Surry Co. VA. William Little buys land in 1709 from Edmund Napier Jr. (or Edward Napkin); this land is left in 1740 to William Little and John Little. He signed a will on 29 Sep 1740 in Surry Co. VA.950 The Thigpen Tribe says his will, Surry Co. Deed Book 3, pp 254/5, Sept 29, 1740 names only 5 of his then living children: 1st son Wm, 2nd son John, 3rd son Benj; 2nd dau Katherine; 3rd dau Patience; wife living, un-named Surry County Virginia Will...lists his will in Will Book ???, page 257, dated 29 Sept 1740, Rec 19 Nov 1740. William and Benjamin Little executors. Sons (in order) William, John, Benjamin; daughters 2nd daughter Katherine and 3rd dau Patience . Witnesses Thomas Pretlow, Jr, John Atkinson, Martha Price. Lists his residence as Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry. Wm gets "my plantation and one-half of a tract of land where he lives which contains two hundred acres; also my brass kettle after my wifes decease." John gets the other half - 100 acres. Benjamin gets "this plantation & land where I live, after my wife's decease." He also sets "my Mullatto boy James Bruce free at twenty one if my wife dies before then and if she does I loan? him to my son Benjamin he must serve til thirty one if if my wife lives so long." William and Benjamin filed an inventory March 18, 1740/1741 (pg 275): "To 4 cows and calfs To 3 baron? cows? He died about Nov 1740 in Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co. VA.1062 William Little was listed in John Little's Tithables, along with Francis Little in 1698, indicating he was John Little's second son. According to The Thigpen Tribe, this William was transported from Mass. to Surry Co. VA where in 1682 he purchased land from Edward Napkin. Actually Phillip Hunniford sold the land to Edward Napkin Sr. on 4 April 1682. His son, Edward Napkin, sold that land in 1709 to William Little. Parents: John LITTLE and Elizabeth [PROCTOR]. Spouse: Frances RAYNER. Children were: Elizabeth LITTLE, Alice LITTLE, William LITTLE, John LITTLE, Katherine LITTLE, Benjamin LITTLE, Patience LITTLE, Martha LITTLE, Abraham LITTLE. Chief Justice William LITTLE was born on 27 Feb 1691/92 in Marshfield Massachussets.1063,1064 According to Terry Savage, he was born 1671 in England. But according to the Dictionary of North Carolina Biography, he was born in Marshfield Mass. Mayflower Families says he was born 27 Feb. 1692. He graduated in 1710 in Harvard.407 He was living on 17 Jul 1721 in North Carolina.407,1065 William Little was appointed Attorney General of North Carolina on 2 April 1724. On 2 Apr 1724 he was appointed Attorney General in North Carolina.407 On that date, he took the oath of office. He owned Deed in Beaufort Co. on 3 Aug 1731 in Beaufort Co. NC.1066 According to the author, Beaufort Co. Deed Bk 2, p. 92 contains deed by William Little of Edenton where he sold land on north side of Pamlico River and west of Grindal Creek. He died about Aug 1734 in Chowan Co. NC.1067,1068 Chief Justice Wm. Little: Will probated in Chowan County. Executed June 24, 1734; probated Sep 3d 1734. William Little married Penelope Gale, daughter of Christopher Gale. Mrs. Penelope Little married 2nd Matthew Hardy of Bertie County, N.C." Abstract of Wills lists Penelope Lovick (widow of John Lovick) as friend. Son George is left lands in Meherrin Neck, William lands at Okaneechy, and dau Penelope mill at Hoskins. William Little was involved in the "blank patent" affair by which hundreds of thousands of acres of land were illegally engrossed [Dictionary of NC Biography]. The legislature described Little, Gale, and John Lovick as evil avaricious men. Parents: Lt. Isaac LITTLE and Bethiah THOMAS. Spouse: Hannah WILLARD. William LITTLE was born about 1705 in Surry Co. VA. He is listed in his father's will as the oldest son. Thigpen Tribe lists his birth in 1685, but that is not possible. He owned in 1738 in Surry Co. VA.1069 He owned on 18 Feb 1755 in Surry Co. VA. William sold 100 acres to Buford Pleasant " it being part of a tract of land granted by pattent to Phillip Hunniford bearing date the 17 Day of May 1666 which was left to the said John Little by his Father in his last will and testament it is part of the tract of land which William Little the father of the sd John Little purchased of Edward Napkin junr" on 5 Jan 1709. He was living on 23 Jun 1755 in Surry Co. VA.1070,1071 10 Jan 1755 William Little and wife Mourning of Surry Co. to Thomas Davis of Elizabeth City Count 300 acres (being the land William Hart sold him on 16 Mar 1738) bounded by the Mill Swamp, the Meadow Branch, Mile Branch, Benjamin Bell, and the Hog Pen Branch. Witnesses were Thomas Wilson, Benjamin Little, Jacob Little, Joseph Holleman. On 23 Jun 1755 Mourning Little, wife of William Little, relinquished her Right of Dower in the 300 acres sold to Thomas Davis of Elizabeth City County In the 1755 tax list for Beaufort; Wm. Little, Abraham Little, James Little, John Little, and Thomas Little were listed. William and Abraham were listed together with only 2 polls (themselves). Amos Atkinson was also listed. In 1762; Isaac, James, John, Joseph, and Robert Little were listed. [NEED TO DEFINE SENTENCE: moved]658 September 1755, William Little of Surry Co. VA received 300a on Cheeks Mill Swamp to pay a 40 pound obligation from James Cheek in Halifax precinct NC. Deed was witnessed by Amos Atkinson and Abraham Little. He died in Mar 1756 in Beaufort Co. NC.1072 Beaufort Co. NC March Court, 1756. Son Abraham 100 acres where he now dwells, Thos Sharp, Cheek's Mill Creek, James Hearn; 12lb to survey the land I bought from James Cheek & then to make a title to his 2 brothers. Son William & James - the remainder of sd tract of land which I bought from James Cheek. Son Jacob - 100 acres where I now dwell joining the Dividing Branch. Son John - 100 acres on north side of sd Dividing Branch except my daughter Jane Moring to have the use of where she now dwells during her lifetime. Son Isaac - pot. Son Joseph 10L VA. Wife Morning - rest of my estate during her lifetime & then to my 5 youngest sons Jacob, William, James, Joseph & John. Wife: Morning. Executors sons Isaac and Jacob Little. Witnesses Amos Atkinson, Mary Judkins, Jane Atkinson Descendants of William and Mourning Little are participating in the Little DNA test group and have found a match that leads us to believe we are from Wiltshire Co., England. My cousin Harry Lewis Little, son of my mother's twin (William, Isaac, Jacob, Jacob, David L., John B., William A., Burl); Brad Little (William, Isaac, Jacob, Hosea, Jesse...); Andrew James (William, Jacob, Nam, Etheldred, Thomas...) J. Randal is a descendant of James (Jimmy) Little who migrated from NC to Henderson Co. TN in 1854, along with others who were from Anson Co. - same as our Jacob. Family stories in our Henderson Co. descendants of David Liles Little say that Jimmy was David's uncle. However, we can find no evidence that Jimmy was Jacob's brother and I thought I knew all the brothers. We have an almost perfect match with Barry Little who lives in England and descends from Joseph Little who lived in Trowbridge, Wiltshire Co. England in 1790. According to Leo Little who runs the Little DNA site "In any case, the 35/37 marker match between Barry's DNA and Harry's DNA leaves little doubt that there is a close connection. Especially since your haplogroup is I1a, which only accounts for about 15% of British males (and is the signature mainly of early Viking settlement)." A common ancestor of Barry and Harry (35/37) was most likely born in 1600-1700, though he could also have lived as early as 1400. Check http://www.geocities.com/littlednaproject/MRCA.htm> for details on DNA matches. The DNA results can be found at the Little DNA site http://www.geocities.com/littlednaproject/Results.htm Parents: William LITTLE and Frances RAYNER. Spouse: Morning
(LITTLE). William LITTLE and Morning (LITTLE) were married. It
is likely that Morning is not the mother of Abraham, Isaac, and Jane. William's
will gives Abraham the land where he now lives, Isaac only a pot, and Jane the
right to live where she is now living. He makes other specific requests to Jacob
and John. He then gives the balance to Morning as long as she lives and then
to be divided between his youngest 5 sons. I believe this indicates these are
Morning's children and the other three are not.
William LITTLE was born on 27 Sep 1728 in Edenton NC.407 William was still a minor when his father William died in 1734. Edward Salter was named his guardian. It is possible that William is the son of William's first wife Hannah. Penelope was made guardian of George but not of William. He was living on 30 Apr 1752 in Edgecombe Co. NC.553 William Little of Edgecomb Co. sold 400 acres in Bertie Co., originally granted to his father William Little, to John Benton Jr. He died before 12 Mar 1767 in South Carolina.553 Wakefield, in Mayflower Families, references Probate Records of South Carolina, Easley SC, 1979; 3:38 (Wm. Little), leading me to believe he died in South Carolina. Parents: Chief Justice William LITTLE and Penelope GALE. Spouse: Unknown Female KIMBROUGH. William LITTLE and Unknown Female KIMBROUGH were married.553 Spouse: Catherine STEWART. William LITTLE and Catherine STEWART were married on 25 Dec 1764 in Craven Co. SC.553 I am guessing they married in Craven Co. SC as she is listed as being "of Craven Co." William LITTLE was born about 1734.257 Parents: Dr. Thomas LITTLE and Jedidiah LOTHROP. William LITTLE16 was born about 1745 in Surry Co. VA.1073 While Alice Smith says William Little was born about 1720 in the Thigpen Tribe, in a letter dated August 11, 1958, to Elizabeth Ann Wright (provided by Markham), Mrs. Smith said that her "great, gr gr grandfather William Little was not born until 1745, and he did not marry until 1768." She went on to say that her grandfather's son "was named Noe, pronounced No-e, it was a surname of one of his friends, a preacher. That Nahum you had for Noe, was the son of Jacob, who also had a son Aaron, and a daughter Janie. If you had read the original will of my gr grandfather, William Little, you would have caught the error, for he was an educated man, and would not have miss-spelled Noe's name." He died about Nov 1794 in Edgecombe Co. NC.1073 Will dated May 4, 1790, probated November 1794, Edgecombe Book C, p 293 names wife Elizabeth, sons Exum, Gray, and Noe; daus Tempy, Elsey, Fanny, Polly, Elizabeth. Exrs Exum and Gray Little, sons. Wit. Jesse Little, John Little, Mary Scarborough.
