George LITTLE was born between 1744 and 1747.792 James, Josiah, and George Little were all listed with Thomas in the 1763 tax list, indicating they were born between 1743 and 1747. George was still a minor in 1764, so he must have been born 1744 or later. Wesley Little has them all born earlier. He has George born around 1732. He appeared in the census in 1790 in Pitt Co. NC.793 Next door were James and Josiah Little. See note for Josiah. He died about 1800.722 Parents: Thomas LITTLE. Spouse: . George LITTLE and Unknown CRANDALL? were married. George LITTLE was born on 27 Feb 1810.490 A male is listed in the household of William P. Little in 1810 and 1820 that would be correct age for George. In 1830, there is a male 20-30 living with Ann in Wareen Co. and a male of the same age living with brother Thomas P. Little in Hertford. Either could be him. Ann obviously has other people living with her and the male of that age could be one of them - servants or family. What happens after that to George is unknown. In 1850 there is a George Little of about the right age - 39 - who is living, along with his family, with a Delia Haywood. George has property valued at $15,000, which makes me think it is possible he is from the wealthy Little family whose matriarch has apparently died. He has a child named William and a child named Ann. Parents: William Person LITTLE and Ann HAWKINS. George LITTLE was born about 1855 in North Carolina.19 George was 5 in the 1860 census. He was buried in 1931 in Union Ridge, Sebastian Co. AR.314 Parents: Charley Whitfield LITTLE and Anna Estella WATERS. Gray LITTLE16 was born about 1765 in Edgecombe Co. NC.804 The Ancestral File lists Gray Little, son of Elizabeth Thigpen and William Little, born about 1740. The IGI has several listings: One with Film 1760968 as reference lists his DOB as 1752, Edgecombe NC, parents William Little and Elizabeth. Another gives DOB as 1741 in Edgecombe NC (Batch #F501373 - Film 1396472, sheet 27). Another has a Gray Little, son of William Little and Alicia Elizabeth Laroche, DOB abt 1765 in Edgecombe NC. (Film 452936 Page Number: 0019, Reference Number: 45844) Still another has Gray Little born Martin Co. abt 1753 (Film 1903745). At least two more have him born in Martin Co. from 1751 to 1753. Same man? There are also several marriage records for a Gray Little in Martin Co. some 20 years later - all to a Miss Taylor. He served in the military in 1810 in Edgecombe Co. NC.701 According to Wright, Gray was a major in the County Militia for a period of years, but resigned his commission in 1810 (Legislative Papers 1810, pg. 246, NC Archives). He died on 13 Aug 1824 in Edgecombe Co. NC.699,701,805 Widow Sylvia Little petioned for dower Nov 1824. He had eleven tracts of land: 1) adj heirs of Jesse Knight, 2) adj Lamuel Thipen, 3) adj Eaton Cobb, 4) adj Stallings, 5) the Lewis Fort Tract, 6) adj Billups, 7) the woods bought of Isaac Norfleet, 8) adj James Thigpen, 9) adj David Mayo, 10) adj Ephraim Daniel, 11) adj Christopher Harrell. Petition Aug 1824 stated his death was Aug 13, 1824. Division of land was among heirs 1) Blake Little, 2) Gray Little, 3) Elijah Manning and Lydia his wife, 4) Benjamin Manning and Silvia his wife, 5) Lydia Price, a minor with her natural guardian Elijah Price, 6) William Wilkerson and Sally Wilkerson, both minors with Charles Wilkerson their gdn, and 7) William Little, Seth Little, and Penina Little all minors with Willis Knight their gdn. A petition for dower Aug 1824 stated Gray Little died Aug 13, 1824. Blake and Gray Little, administrators, provided inventory of money received from store and account of property sold in Stantonsburg in May Court 1825. A subsequent will of Sylvia Little July 25, 1827 lists Gray, William, Seth and Penina. She does not mention the other children mentioned in the dower petition. Likely, the other children are children of an earlier wife but it is possible she felt they already had received their portions or had some other reason to omit them from her will. His negroes were divided by appointed Commissioners in June 1825. They were valued at $10,850 and were divided among 10 heirs. The settlement is recorded in Edgecombe County Court Minutes for Aug. 1825 and Edgecombe County Inventories and Accounts of Sales 1820-1825, pages 682-3 (Wright, Manning & Allied Families). At least one source refers to him as Major Gray Little. The IGI has a record that makes it look like he signed a will in 1790, but it obviously refers to the will of his father William in which he was mentioned. Thighpen 26 Manager. Parina may be Penina; Gray had a sister whose name was Penina. Parina S. may have been deceased since she was listed with the same surname and at the bottom of the list. Perhaps she died after the official day of the census start and Gray and Betsy named their new child after her. Next door was William Little, age 45. With him were Tempy 41, NC; Benjamin B. 19, student, NC; Nancy S. 5 AL, and Wesley Harper 22, manager. A few households away were Cullen Little and his family, Gray Drake, and Noah Little (living with Green B. Taylor). AL with wife Nancy and several children. He died on 18 Apr 1857 in Bladen Springs, Sumter Co. AL.806 The document cites an obituary in Bladen Springs NC with the code (Raleigh Register, May 20, 1857). This reference makes it appear he died in Edgecombe Co., but an earlier citation indicates he died in Sumter Co. AL. Bladen Springs AL is in Choctow Co., which is adjacent to Sumter and Marengo Co. Bladen Springs NC is in Bladen Co., in the southern part of the state, and far from Edgecombe. He owned 63 slaves in 1860 in Sumter Co. Arkansas.816 Harry probably was on a leave of absence the last year of his contract as he went to Peabody to work on his Masters in 1928. He was educated Masters Degree in Education in 1928 in Peabody Teachers College, Nashville, Tennessee.817 Between 1929 and 1934 he was Director of School Administration, State Education Department in Arkansas.817 Harry probably was on a leave of absence the last year of his contract as he went to Columbia on a Fellowship in 1933. On 1 Aug 1929 he was State Supervisor of Elementary and Rural Schools in Arkansas.812 About Jul 1931 he was Lecturer in University of Missouri.818 The article said that Harry was to "deliver two addresses today at a meeting of school direcotrs of 30 counties in southwestern Missouri." "Mr. Little gave a course of lectrues on school reorganization at the summer term of the University of Missouri last year." He was educated PhD in Education in 1934 in Columbia University, New York City, New York.819 Harry was awarded the Eleanor Colford Morris fellowship for education in Columbia University, with a stipend of $1500. Both the Arkansas Democrat and Arkansa Gazette articles reporting the fellowship stated that it was unusual for a person who was never a student at Columbia to receive this award. "The honor was siad to have been conferred because of his outstanding work in connection with school reorganization surveys in Arkansas and Missouri." (Democrat). "He was assigned to assist in making a special survey of the Missouri public school system two years ago (would be 1931) after he and Dr. H.A. Dawson had completed a survey by counties in Arkansas." (Gazette) He earned his PhD in 1934. Between 1934 and 1948 he was Chairman of Teacher Education Division, Georgia State Teachers College for Women in Milledgeville Co. GA.817 Between 1 Apr 1948 and 1 Jan 1953 he was Superintendant of Schools in Little Rock AR.817 Between 1 Jan 1953 and 30 Jun 1954 he was Head of UNESCO Education Mission in Bayambang, Philippines.814 The Arkansas Gazette article is undated and says that Dr. Little will go to Paris Jan 1 to start his indoctrination. A letter from Paul R. Hanna, Director, Education Division, United States Mutual Security Agency in Manilla, Philippines, dated December 23, 1952, expresses "I hope this letter reaches you before you leave for Paris for your two weeks of indoctrination prior to coming to the Philippines to head up the UNESCO educational team." An article in The Little Legend, Vol. 2, No. 6, Aug. 1954 issue, says, "July 2 was a red letter day for the Little clan, for it was the day Harry and Gladys arrived in Little Rock after 18 months and many, many miles." This was when they returned from the Philippines. In Oct 1954 he was President and General Manager, Arkansas School Services Inc. in Little Rock AR.820 An article in The Little Legend, Vol. 2, No. 8, November 1954, said "The Arkansas School Serv Inc., a newly formed organziation designed to supply everything except pupils and teachers, has named Harry A. Little as president and general manager." This was a company formed by Harry and a partner. Another article in January 1955 gave the address of the company as 1401 Cantrell Road, Little Rock and described "products of the company, such as sliding doors, sky-lightes, ceiling materials, floor coverings, and others." Between Jul 1955 and 1957 he was Director of Elementary & Teacher Education, FOA-IIAA, USAID in Ciudad Trujillo, Domincan Republic.814,821 A job description dated Mar 30, 1955, is the only record in Harry's papers I find of the date. On July 13, 1955 Gladys joined him there according to an itenerary in his papers. An article in The Little Legend, Vol. 3, No. 6, August 1955 said "Harry and Gladyse are off again -- this time to the Dominican Republic, where he is to be Director of Teacher Training and Elementary Education. He left Little Rock on June 29th so that he could get working before July 1. Gladyse was left with the big job of getting everything shipped. Yes, they are taking their furniture, etc." This time it will be Spanish instead of Tagalog." Another article in the same issue was written by Harry and was a short history and description of the Dominican Republic. Harry concluded the article, "Like all other wide-awake countries, this one knows that its future is dependent on the education of the masses of ;the people. It has asked the U.S. to help in planning of an educational program that will help every one live better. That is my job." Harry wrote several letters to his colleagues and employees on June 26, 1957, expressing his appreciation for their friendship and work. One starts "Before I leave the Dominican Republic I want to express my appreciation for the opportunity I have had of working with you..." These were clearly "going-away" letters. Between Sep 1957 and Nov 1962 he was Director in Thailand.822,823 A letter from Harry's friend Prosper, dated Aug. 5, 1957, in Ciudad Trujillo, DR, said "It's nice that you have a chance to visit your parents and relatives, after being far away from the, so many years. In your letter, you said that you are going to direct a program on teacher education in Libya, but this morning Mr. Wood told me that he had a letter from somebody in which it says that your are going to work in Vietnam." However, Meryle remembers that when Ditty Mom died Oct. 17, 1957, Harry was on his way to Thailand. By the time the next issue of The Little Legend was published in February 1958, Harry was in Thailand. According to that article, "Harry was under a doctor's care for "Thai belly" before he had been in Thailand a month." An article in The Little Legend in June 1959 said "Harry and Gladyse expect to return to the US in October...when their present assignment terminates." A Little Legend article in December 1960 indicated that Harry and Gladyse were still in the States. In October 1960, the Little Legend said "On their return to Bangkok, the traveling Littles stopped in Hong Kong for two days." Whether they were returning from a vacation or starting a new term is not stated. One in March 1962 indicates they are in Thailand. "In October, Harry and Gladyse left Bangkok and flew to Singapore for a six-day spending spree. ... This was an exciting vacation--they even missed monsoons." An article in The Little Legend in Feb 1963 by Harry says "I arrived in the U.S.A. on November 18th after a wonderful trip through Europe. It is now February and I am ready to take of for Laos for another two years." On 1 Mar 1963 he was Supervisor of Community Schools in Vientiane, Laos.824 An article on the first page of the Feb. 1963 Little Legend says "Harry and Gladyse arrived in the U.S the evening of the 18th of November, after coming from Bangkok by a circuitous route.... Around March 1, Harry will report for work in Laos' capital city of Vientiane, where he will be Supervisor of Community Schools." In November 1964, the Little Legend says "As of this date, Harry is due to finish his job in Vientienne on June 30 of 1965." However, they must have been reassigned to Laos, as a Little Legend article in August 1965 says "Harry and Gladyse have settled again into a Vientiane way of life." In Sept. 1966 issue of the Little Legend, it said "It took Harry 5 days to report to the Washington office on his activities in Laos for the last 2-1/2 years." He retired on 15 Jan 1968 in Washington, D.C..825 Harry's Department of State, Agency for International Development retirement identification card states that the retired 1/15/68 after completing 14 years of loyal and meritoriuous service for teh United States Government. In Sep 1968 he was Visiting Professor, Hendrix College in Conway Arkansas.826 According to the June 1969 issue of the Little Legend, Harry was to continue his teaching the next year. He died on 23 Jul 1979.827 Harry died from cancer and the complications of diabetes. He had been diagnosed with diabetes at least 10 years before, and had been diagnosed with cancer about a year before the died. Harry was in bad shape for the last few months, but insisted on coming to the family reunion at Hot Springs in July. Louise said he was holding on to see the family one more time. He became very ill at the reunion Saturday and had to be carried to his car. He died that Sunday evening in his chair at home. Parents: William Alfred LITTLE and Montezella LEWIS.
