Ephraim LILES Jr. Parents: Ephraim LILES.

Ephraim LILES was born about 1720 in Chowan Co. NC. Basing his birth on being at least 25 when James was born about 1745. [NEED TO DEFINE SENTENCE: moved] Ephraim, John, and James went from Chowan to Edgecomb and later to Anson County. The earliest official record of a citizen of name Liles in Anson County is an entry in the Colonial Records of Land, granted 21 Mr 1751 to "Ephraim Liles of Anson County". Later he was granted land on the south side of the Pee Dee River. He died in 1751 in Anson Co. NC. He was buried in Ivy covered mound near Pee Dee River. Ephraim came to North Carolina from Virginia or Maryland early in the 18th century as a fugitive from Indians. "The story is that in hunting deer he came upon a band of Indians similarly engaged, and mistaking one of the Indians who wore a deer-stalking manse for his quarry, shot and mortally wounded him. He took the wounded man to the Indian's home and expressed deep regret. And compromised with the Indians by giving them his fine white horse. A few days later while Ephraim was splitting logs, six braves brought news of the man's death and summoned Ephraim to the tribal council. With clever stratagem, Liles asked them to lend a hand so he could finish his log. Whereupon he knocked out the wedges which held the partially split log, leaving the Indians captive with their hands painfully caught in the log." He fled to North Carolina with the Indians in pursuit, arriving at the Pee Dee River at nightfall and safely reaching Grassy Island. Heavy rains caused the river to rise and the Indians abandoned pursuit believing he had not survived. Ephraim made his way to Anson County and his family joined him there. The Indians later heard he still lived and sent a party to kill him. They shot at him while he stood in his door but missed. "Further attempts were prevented by the intercessions of friends he had made among local Indians. It is said that a nephew, also named Ephraim, was killed in South Carolina, by this same tribe, presumably. Some versions of the story say it occurred in SC on Broad River."
