John DAVIS.334,335 According to Buren, his grandfather John Davis was the brother of Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederacy. Buren has a picture of John Davis hanging in his living room and has a musket that this family carried either in the Civil War or the Rev. War.

Deese, of Tennessee, and others of N.C., heirs-at-law of Clement Deese, dec’d, were summoned to appear before the Judge of Probate and Superior Court in response to a petition by J.O. James Braswell DEES was living in Jul 1876 in Arkansas.339 Summons of the heirs of Clement Deese included J. W. Deese of Ark. Not certain that he is the same person, but believe he is. See note for Edmund Deese for details. Parents: Clement DEES and Elizabeth UNKNOWN.
Jannet DEES was born about 1823 in NC.340 She died on 1 Jan 1903 in Union Co. NC.341 She was buried about 1 Jan 1903 in Olive Branch Cem, Union Co. NC.10 Tombstone lists her as Janet B. Little b Aug. 28 1822 - d Jan. 1 1903 She was also known as Jane.342 In the 1860 and subsequent censuses, she was listed as Jannet, but her marriage record listed her as Jane Dees. Her tombstone lists her as Janet B. Little. It is likely that Jane is the daughter of Clement and Elizabeth Dees, based on the close proximity of Elizabeth Dees and her son Hartswell in the 1860 census.

Josephus Monroe DEES was born on 3 Aug 1859.343 He died in 1877.344 Elouise Lewis remembers her father showing her the grave of his "half-brother" in Dayton Cemetery. The story was that Josephus did not get along with his step-father and so got a job on Black Jack Ridge, but met an early death in 1877. Parents: DEES? and Rachel E. DEES.

Rachel E. DEES was born between 1835 and 1840 in Tennessee. Family history says Rachel was an orphan from Tennessee. .
Evidence indicates she had been previously married and Dees was her married name. The family bible, recorded by Wilburn listed no birth or marriage date for Rachel. It did, however, list Josephus Monroe Dees was born August the 3 AD 1859. Whether Josephus was a son of Rachel, brother, or other, we do not know for certain.
The 1880 census listed Rachel as age 40 and listed Tennessee as place of birth and also as place of birth for both her parents. That census listed Tennessee as place of birth for the mother of all the children, even Wilburn.
I have searched the online census records for Dees of any name in KY, IL, MO, and TN. In Pope Co. IL (because of the marriage license), I searched for just the name Rachel (spelled various ways) in the right age bracket. No luck.
I did find two interesting possibilities in other counties:
In Graves Co. KY, adjacent to Calloway Co., I found two DEES girls (Sarah age 13 and Rachel age 10, both born TN) living with C. Harper, 60, and Martha Harper, 61 in 1850. This Rachel fits perfectly, but I cannot think of what to do next. I found Castleton Harper in the 1840 census in Graves and used that data to post a query on the Genforum Harper surname web page. I searched for any Rachel in Graves in 1860 and found no likely candidate. By that time the Harpers are gone – probably deceased. Since Rachel named her first daughter Sarah, you could make a case that she named her after her sister. But this would assume that Rachel’s son Josephus Monroe was born out of wedlock.
I found a Rachel LEACH age 10, along with William Leach age 8, living with Jonathan Dees and wife Mary in Wayne Co. MO. But the birthplace does not fit: it says MO and lists different places for the husband and wife, which leads you to believe the place was correct. I have also posted a query on the Leach Genforum to try to find out what happened to this Rachel.
I can find no leads in Pope Co. There is one Dees family there at times who appear to be related to the Bollinger/Wayne MO families if you believe the info on the Dees Genforum.
She died on 27 Jun 1889 in Mansfield AR. " Mrs. Rachel Lewis of Mansfield died suddenly at noon. __ Apoplexy was the cause." Arkansas Gazette, June 27, 1889, page 4, column 4. It was the sixth paragraph
in a long column headed: Work of the Scissors.
Her tombstone, however, reads 1835-1888. She was buried about 28 Jun 1889 in Lewis Cemetery, Dayton, Scott Co. AR. Rachel's marker says "Rachel Dees Lewis, wife of J.W. Lewis, 1835-1888"
Rachel was said to be an orphan from Tennessee.

Viney was listed in the 1870 census with the Dugal Ross family. She was listed
as 16, the same age as Jemima A. She was a puzzle until Harry Ross pointed
out that Joseph F. Ross was found in the later censuses with Vinny (apparently
wife). Apparently Joseph and Vinney married prior to the 1870 census and were
living with Dugal and family.
Marriages of Some Henderson County, Tennessee Residents lists Joseph F. Ross,
son of D.W. Ross, married to Vina Dennison about 1872. Another date provided
is 6-22-1928, but I do not know what this note means. Perhaps that is when Viney
died, as we believe Joseph died earlier. Children were: William H. ROSS, James A.
ROSS, I.F. ROSS, Amanda W. ROSS.
Lyda DENTON died about 1889.136 She died after giving birth to one son.
