Like many great rivers of the world, the Amazon is life and death to many - see recent flood levels (right). The river is 10 ft below my feet and a couple miles wide at this point! In the early days, rubber barons made big money on the plantations. But now, ecotourism has people flying in from all over the world to see "the meeting of the waters".
