(Lincoln, NE)-In celebration of its 56th
anniversary, the Lincoln Coin Club (LCC) of Lincoln, Nebraska, is
offering a new club medal they call a "Lincoln Large Cent."
"To be sold as a club fundraiser, these medals are the size and
composition of an American large cent, but have Lincoln's bust on the
obverse and an American Hard Times token pattern from a United States
large cent on the reverse," LCC club president Barry Nowak said. "It's
a great way for us to honor Abraham Lincoln-the 16th U.S. president and
the namesake of Nebraska's capital city-and celebrate our anniversary.
The dies for the medals were hand-engraved, and the letter punching and
actual striking of the pieces were done by hand, explained Nowak.
The obverse looks like a 2007, oversized copper cent, while the reverse
has a wreath and the words "Not One Cent" in the center, surrounded by
"Lincoln Coin Club." The reverse design is similar to Hard Times tokens
issued in 1837 that used the phrase "Not One Cent" as a shortened form
of the sentence "millions for defense, not one cent for tribute," a
reference to French demands for bribes in the war with England.
Minted by Striker Token & Medal of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, the
copper medals weigh 11.4 grams and measure 29 mm in diameter-the same
size and weight of a freshly minted U.S. large cent. Mintage will be
limited to 300 copper and 50 silver medals, with half of each mintage
being counter-struck with a Lincoln small cent reproduction.
The club hopes to issue a new "coin" each year with a different date.
Copper medals may be purchased for $7, while silver medals are $22,
plus $1.95 each for shipping and handling. To order, contact the
