December 11 Federal Courthouse Rally Statement by Mary Ellen Brennan

The Houston Fair Vote Organization, is a nonpartisan ad-hoc group in favor of a full and fair vote count of the votes in the 2000 presidential election. We are holding this rally to protest the U.S. Supreme Court injunction issued Saturday, December 10

The Florida Supreme Court correctly and lawfully interpreted Florida election law in ordering a statewide manual recount of under votes.

The Florida Supreme Court did not violate the Constitution or any federal statue by ordering the people's votes be counted in accordance with state law.

The Florida Supreme Court's decision did not violate the equal protection or due process rights of George Bush and Dick Cheney.

The recount ordered by the Florida Supreme Court was not selective; it was a statewide recount of uncounted ballots in every Florida County that had not already completed a manual count.

There is no evidence that the manual counts have been conducted haphazardly or inconsistently. The count has been orderly and was being completed in full public view.

The Bush campaign claim is that a manual recount is unconstitutional on its face. Manual counts have been used since the nation's founding; they were used throughout the country in this election; the were used right here in Texas; and they were used throughout Florida to arrive at the certified total.
