The English Open was held the first week in April
in 1996. It took place about an hour north of London by train. Kettering,
Northamptonshire was the host city this year. This was the first stop of
the first ever ITTF Pro Tour.

The entire tournament was held on 12 tables.
Compared to the 80+ tables used at the US Open this was quite different
to us. I went over with Aly Salam from Atlanta. Many a night was spent
socializing with the British umpires at the hotel pubs.
It was an excellent event with most of the worlds top male athletes
and many of the top women. Coming shortly after the US
Olympic Trials in Flint Michigan, this was an excellent event in our
preparation for Atlanta in July.
