For out of town bike rides the minimum equipment and requirements are:
Licensed ham radio operator - Technician class or higher license
2 meter mobile radio or HT and amplifer with at least 25 Watts power
Spare fuses and a 2 meter gain antenna
Optional: Dual band 2m/70cm radio and antenna is better but not required
since a majority of traffic is on 2 meters. Build a cable to attach the
radio directly to the battery; have duct tape to attach antenna if mag
mount won't work. A second radio or scanner is useful for monitoring
other active nets.
