306. William Berry KETCHUM [image] (Samuel Wesley , Green Berry , Peter Reasor , Edward ) was born on 24 Nov 1876 in San Saba County, Texas. He died on 7 Dec 1951 in Lubbock, Texas. He was buried in Anton, Texas.
William and Mattie were married in Cleburne, Johnson Co., Texas in 1905 by Rev. W. P. Luton. They were counted in the Childress County, Texas 1910 census (near the Hall Co. line) with daughter Rosa Lee. William Berry Ketchum submitted a World War One draft registration card in Hall County on September 12, 1918 (serial #787, order# 1140) at which time he was a self employed farmer living in Turkey, Hall County, TX. It appears that he signed the registration card with an X mark, indicating that he perhaps could not read or write. The family moved to Lorenzo, Crosby Co., Texas at some time after July, 1919 and later to a brand new town called Anton, in Hockley Co., Texas. Ranch owner W. L. Ellwood had sold off more than 200 farms from his ranch and contracted with the Anton Townsite Company to plat a town at the site of Danforth Switch, a spur of the Pecos and Northern Texas Railway. The site, in the center of what had been the Spade Ranch's north pasture, was named Anton in honor of J. F. Anton, a Santa Fe railroad executive. On December 3, 1924, the Anton Townsite Company sponsored a "Grand Opening Jubilee" for the town; despite a bad sandstorm, they sold over 200 town lots the first day. It was on this day, or shortly after, that William Berry Ketchum bought their homesite and over the next several months began to build what was to be a small, three-room temporary house for the family. However, it was not to be.
William Berry and Mattie were divorced on September 18, 1926 in Lubbock County, Texas at which time she left Anton, and later married and moved to Ft. Worth, TX. William Berry lived the rest of his life in Anton in the "temporary" house, and never remarried. The three youngest children, Nellie, John Berry, and Waliene stayed in Anton with him. The oldest, Rosa Lee, was age 19 and married and lived in Lubbock at the time.
After moving to Anton he worked most often as a teamster. He had a good team of mules, Kate and Sam, and a good dray wagon with which he hauled mail, from the train depot to the post office, and other trade goods to merchants in the small town. The Anton Independent School District was established in 1925; classes were held in two small frame buildings, though by the end of the year the district had obtained a $40,000 building. William Berry hauled most of the bricks and the other building materials for the construction of the first Anton School, as they arrived daily on the train.
William married Mattie Louise HINES [image] daughter of Jeff HINES and Jalie TALLEY on 18 Jun 1905 in Cleburne, TX. The marriage ended in divorce.Mattie was born in 1886 in Tennessee. She died on 25 Jul 1961 in Ft. Worth, TX. She was buried in Laurel Land Memorial Cemetery, Ft Worth, TX.

"Mrs Mattie Louise Wright, 75, of 1305 Pafford died Tuesday in a hospital. Mrs. Wright was a native of Tennessee and had lived here 30 years. She was a Baptist. Survisors include a son, J. B. Ketchum of Oklahoma; two daughters, Mrs. Charlie Burke of Lubbock, Tx and Mrs. Tom Spradley of Anton, Tx; a sister, Mrs. Etta Jackson of Illinois; two brothers, Charley Hines of Cleburne, Tx and Fred Hines of California; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Crowder & Brooks Chapel with burial in Laurel Land."Mattie is buried next to Hosea Ballou Wright in Laurel Land Cemetery. There is no grave marker for her. Cemetery personnel indicated that she is buried just to the side of second husband Hosea, and that she had purchased both plots at the time of his death in 1958.

Certainly he was always there and I believe he may have been a carpenter. Apparently he would give my Mum some money now and then without Grandma knowing. I also remember him killing a rattlesnake with a spade when it appeared to be threatening us by our swing in the yard. I really can't remember anything else."
