278. Earnest Clifton SPRADLEY [image] "Tom" (Augustus D. , Bryant Eugene , Bryant , James , Bryant , Andrew ) was born on 14 Apr 1914 in Thorndale, Milam Co., Texas. He died on 25 Sep 2002 in Houston, Texas. He was buried on 30 Sep 2002 in Anton, Texas. Earnest was employed as the Owner of Spradley Pump Sales & Service Co. in Anton, Texas.

Born in Jones county, TX, Watsons Branch. His mother and older sisters said that as a baby he cried, or bawled, a lot so they nicknamed him "Tom Bawl" for Thomas Henry Ball, a Texas prohibitionist gubernatorial candidate in 1914, and Earnest was known as Tom for the rest of his life. He joined the First Baptist Church in 1923 at Foot, Texas. Moved to Anton, Texas in December, 1928 with his mother and father and sister Nora in one car and other siblings in another car, taking a two day journey over mostly gravel roads for 250 miles, from Gatesville, TX. Arrived in Anton late at night and found someone who directed them to a good samaritan who allowed them to spend the night in a barn. The next day they went on to the home of Frank and Edna Bishop, about 2 miles SE of Anton. Edna was older half-sister of Tom and had moved to Anton after marrying Frank Bishop. Tom lived in Anton for 74 years until the death of his wife. As a young man Tom served in the Civil Conservation Corp during the Great Depression to help support his family. Later he worked as an aircraft mechanic at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock. Later, he always worked for himself. First, as a truck owner/driver/contractor hauling baled cotton from the cotton gins in Anton, TX to the compress/shipping companies in Lubbock, TX. He also owned a house moving service at one time, and he also bought river sand and gravel and sold it to concrete contractors and building material resellers at one time After a few years he was owner of a small but successful irrigation pump sales & service company for many years. He lived almost all of his adult life in Anton, Texas. He was a Mason and served as master of the Masonic Lodge #1282 in Anton, Texas.

LITTLEFIELD(SPECIAL) Graveside services, with Masonic Rites,
for Earnest Clifton “Tom” Spradley age 88 of Anton will be
conducted at 10:00 AM Monday September 30, 2002 in the Anton
Cemetery with Reverend Rush Coffman, pastor of the First Baptist
Church of Anton, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of
Hammons Funeral Home of Littlefield.

Mr. Spradley died at 3:45 PM Wednesday September 25, 2002 in
Memorial City Hospital, Houston, Texas.

He was born April 14, 1914 in Jones County, Texas and moved to
the Anton community with his family in December, 1928. He married
Waliene Ketchum January 14, 1938 at Clovis, NM. She preceded
him in death June 29, 2001. Mr. Spradley owned and operated the
Tom Spradley Pump Sales and Service Co. in Anton for many years.
He was a member, and Past Master of the Anton Masonic Lodge.
He was a Baptist, having joined the First Baptist Church of Foot,
Texas in 1923.

SURVIVORS INCLUDE: One Son: Ernest Berry Spradley and wife
Jackie of Spring, Texas; One Daughter: Nelva Joyce Hardin, and
husband Doyle of Arlington, Texas; One Grandson: Dean Allen
Hardin, Arlington, Texas.

Earnest married Waliene KETCHUM [image] daughter of William Berry KETCHUM and Mattie Louise HINES on 14 Jan 1939 in Clovis, New Mexico. Waliene was born on 26 Jul 1919 in Newlin, Hall Co., Texas. She died on 29 Jun 2001 in Lubbock, Texas. She was buried on 2 Jul 2001 in Anton, Texas.

Waliene moved to Anton with her family in December, 1924. She joined the Baptist Church in Anton in 1932. She managed the household, looked after the children and worked with husband "Tom" to manage their business by helping with the bookkeeping, billing and other tasks. They lived in a small town of about 1,000 population (Anton) in northwest Texas, surrounded by some of the largest cotton farming operations in the U.S.

Her mother and father separated when she was about 5 years of age. She never said why they separated, if she knew. Although she was young, she was a daddy's girl and would not go to live with her mother. She went one time for a few weeks, against her will, to stay with her mother, but was so sad and unhappy, and lonesome for her father, that her mother brought her back and thereafter she stayed with him and grew up in Anton. She only saw her mother occasionally after that.

Earnest and Waliene had the following children:

Martha married (1) Charles Ray BASHAM son of Charles Cleburne BASHAM and Eula Lee BARKER on 4 Aug 1942 in Turnersville, TX. Charles was born on 27 Aug 1921 in TX. He died on 21 Aug 1944 in Georgia USA. He was buried in Coryell County, TX. Charles was employed as U.S. Army Serviceman WWII.

Charles R. Basham (Box No. 0270, Film Reel No. 2.127) of (Coryell Co.) TX, b. 27 Aug/Oct 1921 d. 21 Aug 1944, Serial Number 18040664, who enlisted in Dallas TX on 4 June 1941 as a Private in the Air Corps. He was listed as an entertainer before entering the Air Corps. He was assigned to the 91st Bomb Group (8th Air Force, 1st Wing, 1st Division) and was trained as a gunner. Staff Sargeant Charles Ray Basham was killed in a military plane crash in Georgia USA, on August 21, 1944.

B. Elmer Spradley worked for many years for Hughes Tool Company in Houston, TX He seriously researched the SPRADLEY family genealogy for 50 years or more and a lot of what I have in this data file comes from his research.

B. ELMER SPRADLEY, 98, of Houston, Texas, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2005. He was a long time member of First Christian Church, East Gate Masonic Lodge #1153, Scottish Rite, Arabia Temple Shrine, Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of the Republic of Texas and descendents of San Jacinto. He was preceded in death by his wife, D. Pauline Spradley, sister, Myrle Snodgrass, brother, Theron P. Spradley Sr., brother, Gillis L. Spradley, sister, Doris Nell Spradley and brother, Glenn M. Spradley. He is survived by his daughter, Alice Faye Rheaume, son, Freddy Spradley, brothers, J.B. Spradley Sr. and wife Louise, John E. Spradley Jr. and wife Luvilla, Ed Ray Spadley and wife Swanell, Kenneth S. Spradley and wife Joyce, sister-in-law, Annie, granddaughter, Dorothy Rheaume, grandson, Mark C. Spradley and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will be receiving friends on Monday, November 28, 2005 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Park Lawndale in The Main Chapel with burial to follow.
